Well the 840m will be decent but a machine with an 850m will be significantly faster with 4x the memory bandwidth.

I went back and forth with an Asus rep on Facebook. He said the UX32LN will likely not hit the US. He also mentioned that there will be a successor to the Zenbook(didn't confirm the model being UX303 though) in the US but no word on it having dedicated graphics or not. No ETA either, which means probably October or later. It's too bad too - I would really love to have an 840M but I like the new chassis style and touchscreen more.

I did and the numbers look good. Definitely an improvement over the UX302LG in terms of graphics. I'll share them all in that more detailed post that I plan on having up next week.

Also, the screen is seriously uncalibrated on this unit, but it's a pre-production sample, so things will hopefully change with retail units. So I'm not drawing any conclusions yet. it's the same panel lenovo uses on the Yoga 2 Pro, with mustardy yellows, so it can be fixed with BIOS updates. Here's a pic where I've compared this screen with the iPad Air's : http://www.ultrabookreview.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/colors-screen.jpg .

Looking forward to the writeup! Is the external design gorilla glass or only aluminum like the old UX31 series?

Edit: never mind, found your initial impressions here.

they're using IPS panel on all line (i5 and i7)
and its still using maxwell right?

did you already tested the battery life during maximum load and daily use?

but Q4 its still long way to go..

The screen (3200 x 1800 px on this one, HD and FHD on the UX32) and some design changes (different textured aluminum, slightly taller keyboard), from what i can tell. Not sure if there are any hardware differences, but I'll let you know when I open up this unit.

I'm still performing battery tests, so I won't comment on battery life for now.

So they indeed seem to be very similiar.
Any chance you will compare the UX32LN and UX303 with the Samsung 900X3G, which sadly you have not yet reviewed?

    Dear Andrei,

thank you a lot for the great write-up!

Do you think the UX303LN will be moer expensive than the rather cheap UX32LN?
How likely will there be a matt FHD option on the dislpay?

I have my review over here, in case you're interested: Asus Zenbook UX303LN / UX303 review - faster than ever , i think It answered all your questions.

And I did find out more details about the prices. There will be a Core i7-4510U / 8 GB RAM / 256 GB SSD/ 1920 x 1080 px IPS NON-touch matte display option selling for roughly 1100 euros over here, available in stores at the beginning of July. Given how EU prices compare to those in the US, I'd reckon the same would go for $1200 in the US and probably between 1000 and 1100 in Western Europe. I was expecting more, to be frank.

I did run a couple of games and benchmarks on my test unit, but keep in mind that it's a pre-production sample and more recent Nvidia drivers that should support the 840M chip failed to instal on it. So take these with a grain of salt, they might actually be higher on the final retail units.

Anyway, have a look at the post and let me know if there's anything else you might want to know. I still have this unit till tomorrow and then it's going back.

PS: BTW, as expected, there's also going to be a UX303LA version of this laptop, without the graphics, Core i3/i5 and i7 processors and either a FHD IPS or a HD+ TN panel, ranging between 650 and 1000 euros. Solid deals for the money imh. What do you think?

@Louis I don't have access to a Samsung 900X3G or the UX32LN for actual side by side comparisons, I will have a post comparing this latest UX303LN with the 13 inch previous Zenbooks with dedicated graphics in a few days.

Looks like the UX32LN will be extremely short lived then. I'd rather have the motherboard design carried over from the UX302LG, if nothing else for the extra M2-mini slot for an additional SSD. I could run the same tests with my i7/12GB/SSD UX32LN if you want some direct numbers to compare with for the review.

Hey mate, I'm thinking of buying UX301LA in two weeks and was wondering how the UX303 compares to it in terms of performance.

The UX303LN comes with dedicated graphics, while the UX301LA does not. That's the biggest difference. That aside, the UX303LN supports up to 12 GB of RAM (4GB soldered + 1 free DIM), while the UX301LA only supports up to 8 GB (all soldered). The two share similar processors (I5-4200U, i7-4510U/4500U), but the UX301LA is also available with the faster i7-4558U. There are also some storage option differences, but since both support SSDs, that shouldn't have an impact on performance.

All these being said, what you need the laptop for? If you plan on running games, the UX303LN is the better pick, if you plan on running other demanding software (Premiere, Photoshop, Maya, Eclipse, etc), the UX301LA with the i7-4558U might be the better option, but the i7-4510U version of the UX303LN isn't shabby either, especially if we'll consider the price difference between the top UX301LA and that UX303LN config.

    Hi MikeTLB,

I'd say running demanding software programs is right up my alley - not an avid gamer. I got MSI GX660R which is outdated, tacky looking, but relatively powerful machine. It's pretty bulky to carry it around, so that's why I am looking for sexy, ultra-thin and powerful machine.

The UX301LA seems to be the perfect choice, but I've heard quite a few bad stories about its owners having their hard drive die on them. Do you suppose it's because of the raid 0, or has to do with SanDisk ssd's? That's the only thing that stops me from getting it basically.

    Hi all,

I own a HP Pavilion 15-n252sq laptop which is equipped with a NVidia GeForce 840M graphic card. My problem (and many others' too!) is that I can't find a driver that recognizes this card under Windows 8.1 64-bit! Others say they didn't manage this under Windows 7 64-bit either! How did you manage to install this graphic card? What OS are you running or what driver version are you using? Please help me! It's very frustrating to have a brand new laptop with a useless (new) graphic card in it! :(

    Best regards,

    Paul T.

Well it should have had stock drivers, but if you are having issues installing the drivers from nvidia.com or your manufacturer you may be having issues with the hardware.

    Hi Meaker,

It is a possibility to have hardware problems. But, as I've browsed through the net, many other people encountered the same problem! It seems that nVIDIA didn't release full support for this graphic card due to its new appearance on the market! But it's frustrating: you widely sell a device for which you still need to develop drivers?!?! Did you install NVIDIA GeForce 840M under Windows 8.1 64-bit? If yes, which driver package did you use? Please, tell me!

    Best regards,

    Paul T.

    Hi all,

I am keeping a lookout for this particular notebook model to come to Canada: it has all the specs I need, short of the battery life expectancy.

I was wondering: is the hard drive a 2.5" drive? Because I have a 1TB Samsung 840 Evo SSD drive I use on my current HP Envy notebook I would like to swap into the UX303 model.
This way I can skimp out on the cost of getting a more expensively equipped notebook with my higher capacity SSD.

Adorama in the US has 3 models, but only 1 with the NVIDIA card, the other two are Intel graphics w/ 1080p. Check their website. They are all touchscreen, however. I suspect Asus will not release a non-touch model in the US, which is disappointing, as otherwise this laptop fits exactly what I'm looking for. While I don't necessarily mind having the touchscreen capability, it throws out any notion of a matte screen surface, which I prefer.

I will keep looking occasionally to see if a retailer with a return policy (e.g. Rakuten, Best Buy) shows up for any UX303LN model.

If someone sees a UX303LN with a 1080p matte display for sale from a reputable website -- especially if they can ship to the US, please post it on this thread or PM me. :)

Looking at some of the early review pictures of the components inside this particular model. The hard drive utilizes a M.2 SSD stick; however this is facilitated via an adapter into the standard SATA port. So, with minor modification you could indeed swap a standard 7mm HD into the machine.

An early video review, pictures, and specifications can be found over at “UltrabookReview”, some great info included on this particular model, and variations of the same.

We have the same taste but be aware of the Keyboard. Laptop Keyboards from Europe doesn't have English US/English International Keyboards. UK Keyboards have minor difference. I am Sure Canada, Sub Saharan Africa, and India are your good options. In reality, Canada and UK are the best places to search.

By the way, according to Ultrabookreview, 303 will be released in July or August 2014.

I don't know about the release date, but some sites are starting to list them: Amazon.com, Ncix.com

I do hope the 840M, 1920x1080 with regular HDD is available so that I could swap out the HDD to put in my SSD (and I don't need that high of a resolution).

If anyone has seen the UX303LN with 1080p screen and normal hdd, please post it here, I would appreciate it very much. Thank you.

I guess no matte/non-touch screen version? Oh well, guess I'll be keeping my Vaio Z a while longer.

NCIX lists an ETA date of 7/16 though...is that inaccurate or would US receive the UX303 quicker than Denmark?

I've received quite a few different release time frames depending on location.

US online retailers have been quoting mid-July.

For Australia, I was told they should be in stores mid to late July by Asus Australia facebook reps, however have been told from an online retailer here that they expect to stock it in September...

Seems to be quite a lot of confusion but here's hoping they follow through with the US date.

There will be two screen options for the ux303LA from what I know right now: 1920 x 1080 px IPS Panel (touchscreen, hence glossy) and 1600 x 900 px TN panel (non-glare non-touch)

UX303LA: sturdier (aluminum body) but also heavier, more configurations to choose from, more ports, cheaper, easy to upgrade if needed
Vaio Pro 13: very light but also very flexible (and fragile I might say), better keyboard imh, longer battery life, runs noisier and hotter (expected, given how it is thinner), potential wi-fi problems reported, very limited upgrade options, more expensive, official Sony accessories available (dock, slice-battery)

On top of that, keep in mind that Sony sold the Vaio business last year and that might lead to potential issues with customer support and warranty in the future (just a possibility, definitely not a fact).
