Im considering getting one with a 256GB ssd and 10GB of ram. What Im wondering is if any of yall have done an SSD swap how the performance changed. I was turned off by the standard 5400RPM HDD performance. Also did you see any improvement in battery life? Thanks!

I can't say I've tried an SSD in that laptop but I can say in my desktop the difference was night/day. By far the most noticeable upgrade I've ever done. I would recommend either a Samsung 830 (they have some new ones coming out you should look into) or a Crucial M4. (I have a 128gb 830 and a 120gb Corsair F120)
Battery life should stay close to the same. IIRC the idle consumption of a 5400rpm mech was 0.7-1w which is very similar to both the SSDs I mentioned and most SSDs in general. -
The reason Im asking is I am considering selling my workstation for this and I was initially turned off due to bad standard HDD performance and Im wonder what improvements people who switched saw. Im assuming alot since thats what i saw when I went to an SSD. Im eyeballing a system with 10GB, samsung 830 256GB for ~1500 its tempting but I worry about the GPU handling games like WoW for the next couple of years. Honestly I think I would be fine, but still a huge gamble going from a known good to a different segment and hoping.

It flies with Samsung 830, compared to the stock 500GB HDD + SSD cache. Night and day.

What did you do with the free space on the cache ssd? I'm thinking of Vmware. Other ideas?

I'm using it for storing MP3s though. -
Performance now is very good but for some reason the Samsung SSD is not performing at its maximum potential.
The 4k read and write speeds are slower when using the UX32VD compared to using the same drive on a full blown SATA III capable desktop.
I suppose this is normal - the H77 chipset that the UX32VD is built on might not be able to utilize SATA III to the same degree as a desktop mobo.
I have not found any AS SSD or Crystaldiskmark screenshot of someone using the same Samsung drive in a laptop configuration achieving the maximum throughput that the drive has to offer. -
Tested with 512GB Crucial M4:
