Since it seems that most of the ensemble's will be coming out with MCE....does anyone know if this can be simply upgraded to Pro, or does it require a full OS replacement?

...or, better yet, does anyone know of any tricks that will allow MCE to take advantage of its disabled Pro functions? :)

No ensembles are coming with MCE only the W2j. the rest have PRO. The only thing thats diables is the ability to log into a domain do you need that?

You can add programs, like InterVideo Home Theater, that act just like the MCE part of that edition. I have used the program and like it. Just my $0.02

heres a Q, when you do updates or register for some software sometimes...it will ask what OS you are using, but yet none will haev MCE. So which do i choose? I was told MCE is built on the home kernel but just with multimedia features.

    SRD....

it seems as though i'm beat on both counts.......i have to get a laptop for grad school which begins in june, so that means no V1J or W1J, which means i will likely go with the W2J.
....also, because I will need to connect to the school domain, I will need Pro...

usually the problem is people with Pro wanting the added multimedia features, but in my case, I could do without the multimedia, but require the Pro networking features....woe is me!

I configured a laptop for a client that shipped with MCE 2005. The client wanted Pro, so I tried to install the Pro Upgrade. It wouldn't take. The installer said that the current OS installed (MCE 05) was too new and couldn't be installed. We ended up wiping the drive and installing a full version of Pro.

THe prob is if you get the US W2J you need MCE to use the tv tuner card. And it was the old MCE that was built on Home new ones are built on PRO. there are other options than MCE Beyond media sage others also. But i dont know if they will work with the tuner. There is a way to use MCE on a domain you can hack it i dont know how though im sure if you google it you will find a forum that shows you how.

You could use a number of tv tuner programs - I'm no sure which work and which don't - but you could get most of them for free..... so you could still use it......

would reformatting the W2J with XP Pro void the ASUS Global Warranty, or does they only care about hardware issues?

It's all hardware... but you've got software support on the OS.... if you can reformat and reinstall windows... you probably won't need it.... and pro is enough like MCE that they could still help you...... but if say you called and said your remote or your tv tuner doesn't work - if they find out you swapped the OS they'll tell you they can't help you...... that's about the extent of it.

Speaking of software. I know that ensembles come with a pre-installed OS, but what about productivity suites? Is 'Office' installed on these machines?
