I have to admit, I know next to nothing when it comes to networking. I figured this was a better place to ask than the networking forum as many of you probably have the same laptop I do.
So on to my question. I have a D-link 655 Wireless-N router and I'm wondering if it's possible to get wireless-N speeds out of this laptop. When I checked the router status, I saw I was connected via a wireless-G connection, and sure enough, I have 54 Mbps.
I decided to check the network adapter, and these are the settings

Is it impossible to get a wireless-N connection with this laptop? Thanks for any insight you all can provide.

Should be possible...I'm quite sure the Intel 5100 is b/g/n...maybe not however. Check that you have the right driver installed.

Is your router set to use N? I have a Linksys WRT150N and I can choose what type of connections it allows, A, B, G, N or a mix. Check that.
The name Intel 5100 AGN leads me to believe it should work with N. so I would verify that you have the most up to date driver. Or do a quick google search to see if 5100 AGN even does N. -
The router has to be set to allow N, AND if it has the option to you HAVE to turn on WMM as its part of the N standard that not all seem to follow.
You dont see it on that drop down your looking at because if you look at the first 3 items they relate to N...
I have a 5300 in my g50vt, and its identical.... I had same problem, mine would only connect on A @ 54MB (I have a 5gz only AP) and when I turned WMM boom, 270Mbps. -
I believe you can't get 300Mbps with some Intel cards. The 5100agn supports N speeds but the limit might be 130Mbps due to lack of support of the 40 channel width (don't have that network card so I'm not sure if it does have it). I also have the DIR-655 and its an amazing router! Check the D-Link forums for more info. http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=616.0

One thing I have heard before in the past is that if you're using WEP for your router than it defaults to wireless G, WPA does wireless N.
Note: I have no proof for this information, it could be completely false, but I do remember seeing stuff about this on the net a few months back.
ASUS g50vt-x2 able to connect to wireless-N router with N speeds?
