(Hope I didn't miss this being talked about somewhere else, I looked)

If you didn't see it then here's the link:

Looks to me like an UX-ultrabook chasis with matte black paint. Not sure if it will be part of the ROG lineup, but the logo and materials they're using tells me maybe.

Definitely would be a competitor to the Razer Blade Stealth, and more importantly, will be available outside the USA.

That is pretty awesome. So looks like you will need a thunderbolt 3 port and a USB 3.1 port? He does state... "Using a USB 3.1 type C connector with thunderbolt 3 to get a
pci express 4x 3.0 link to graphics card."

Will this only work with asus laptops?

Hmmm...and wondering if you have to buy it with a gpu inside it already.

I don't think so. They'd be stupid to do that when Razer is selling it's core and wants the core to be used with all types of TB3-enabled laptops

6700HQ certainly is interesting. The whole point about having external graphics seems to be moot when some manufacturers pair it up with a U series CPU. While I'd like to see something like Clevo's laptop with a desktop CPU and an external graphics adaptor, the 6700HQ should be good enough for now. Wonder if this mystery laptop has discrete graphics or if it's like MSI's GS30 though. Even MSI have ditched the 13" laptop in favour of a model with a 6700HQ and a GTX 960M for graphics on the go.

There are a couple of places where we have been discussing, but a dedicated spot for the Asus "Mystery" Laptop is a great idea :)

MSI missed the boat entirely though IMO, because the GS30 had horrible battery life and weak graphics performance and has a big ugly "gaming" logo, so I don't know who their market segment was. Give me 8 hours battery minimum if you're leaving out the dGPU, there's no excuse for it anymore.

If you want the laptop to eDock with a top end GPU, you want the CPU in the laptop to be at least a 47w Quad Core CPU - which isn't going to let you run for 8 hours without a pretty large battery.

The 8 hour run times are attained by putting in a 15w-25w (could be lower) ultra low voltage CPU, which will be crap at keepig a 980ti busy - which means you are giving up FPS with that under powered CPU, vs. the Quad Core 47w (45w) CPU.

4 hours or more would be acceptable to me. During the day I plug in my laptop / phone / etc to top it off. A fast charger that is portable would be acceptable.

We don't know that do we? Did Razer say that?

I think they said other vendors would need to make changes to their BIOS / laptop to be compatible, but they have nothing against that - but I don't think they are going to go out of their way to allow a competitor to sell their laptop and then plug it in to the Razer Core. Maybe I missed it...

I did read on one of the sites (Verge maybe?) that Razer isn't explicitly locking their dock to their products and that it could work with other manufacturers

I don't think there's any reason why they couldn't limit the TDP to 15W with a quad core. I do it manually with throttlestop on my RB 2015, but it's not much of a sacrifice to have it plugged in and say, limited for lower power draw on mobile.

It's possible to vary the TDP on some of the new Skylakes, the 6500U spec says 15w-25w, still not enough TDP even if it were a 4 Core CPU to fully drive a top end GPU, but better.

Maybe it's possible with control over the BIOS to do that with a 6700HQ, they could run it at reduced TDP when mobile, and full TDP when plugged in.

When Asus releases info on their Mystery eGPU laptop, hopefully Asus will disclose that detail and we can find out :)

The ASUS laptop looks like a better alternative to the RAZER stealth, too bad the dock for the ASUS eGPU looks like it does because there is no way I would put something that looks like that in my office, way too big and flashy, hopefully that is not the final design and can dial it back a bit.
The RAZER CORE looks much better.
Wish you can combine the two (ASUS laptop and RAZER Core ) but I don't see that happening.
Overall I like the idea of eGPU docks.
