Just found this report over at digitimes
For those hanging out for the W7...me included....well its finally here, should expect to see this in stores by the end of the month/early june as predicted....although the states maybe different, I remember Justin saying that they werent getting the white ones???, so it could be a bit of a longer wait for US buyers :(
The nice surprise is the pricing, which brings it in below the W5J and should come in under the 2000 USD mark.

ps here is the offical ASUS W7J page

I didn't say we weren't getting the white ones... I barely commented on getting them at all because we're talking about a product being released here in probably July........ but it was just the common sense that told me that Asus can only support a certain number of white systems and the W7 is in a spot we didn't even think needed filling...between the W5f and W3j......

.. I said that if we get a non upolstered S6 - it'll probably be black.... same goes for the w7 (most likely). We'll have to see. I love the pearl color and my next traveling laptop is either going to be an S6 or a W7..... so I certainly hope I'm wrong thinking we can't support more in that color... it's just that other colors are available, so Asus might want to choose something different

I'm a big fan of both.

I'd like to see some flair in the marketplace...how many pieces of flair are you wearing Asus?

    That laptop looks awesome!!

Especially with a go7400!! I am slowly starting to think I really dont need a go7600 and that battery life and size of the laptop is higher priority.

Oh Yes! This makes me such a happy Swatkins! Before the z35f even? My heart's all a-flutter for this machine. Can't wait for this to get into the hands of someone in the community so we can hear all about it! I'm really thankful that "Asus-land" here has some dedicated members who are willing to put in the time to offer up their wisdom. Since it's difficult for many of us to actually physically see/touch the notebooks, a forum such as this is an invaluable resource. Sweet! W7J! :asus:

The w7j sure looks sweet and if i decide to go for a bit more mobility i will take a w7j instead of a w3j even if its a bit slower. Then its the thing about realease dates, if they come at the same time here in sweden a will have a tough decision to make.

Man this does look nice. Maybe I'll stop waiting to buy a w3j and start waiting to get one of these instead... I can probably live with the go7400 and lighter weight over the x1600.

I noticed the digitimes article didn't list any wireless for the w7j which worried me, but the ASUS site lists wifi and bluetooth so it was probably a mistake on digitimes side.

this will be a great alternative to the Intellified iBook (Macbook, maybe...)

surfing around the Asus site, it seems they also plan on releasing an integrated graphics version (cheaper)...

Come to me W7J.... Please get here soon before I spend my money on something else. Too bad the core duo has already been surpassed by its successor. Would it be possible to swap the CPU with a new one whenever they come out? Also can anyone confirm If you could put 2 gigs of ram in this machine?

1.5 gigs is the maximum, it has 512mb ram soldered on. I hope the processor isn't soldered on.

That doesn't make any sense... why would they solder on the RAM? Would it be possible to remove the RAM anyways without damaging the laptop? Also does that mean they are going to use some cheapo brand that might conflict with RAM that I might buy to addon?

Soldered on RAM isn't in standard SODIMM form it's simply memory chips physically attached to the motherboard, it simply can't be modified :(

it's actually quite common with smaller thinner laptops. Asus other 12" models do this as well as other companies like Compal.

    I'm still undecided between W3J and W7J... :'(
    Anyone can convince me?

Is Go7400 a lot less powerful than X1600? I'm not a hardcore gamer, I just want to make sure i can still play 3D games with my notebook for the next 3 years...

The 7400 can barely play the latest games right now on high settings(Such as Oblivion), so 3+ years may be pushing it, unless its at the lowest settings.

Bu tif your a light to casual gamer, with the settings down to low-med you can play the games you want.

The X1600 will definitely be better, but you have to decide if your going to need the much graphics power.

reclus to further help, i play all my game on a geforce 4 ti 4200 128mb video card, now i cannot play all games at max res with high settings, quite frankly its the opposite LOL!. Low res and zero settings, heck i find it fun.

In theory yes the 7400 will last 3 years, because it has PS3 technology and it is still powerfull, if your like me, and don't care about all the fancy eye candy in games, then i guess you can do with a 7400.

BUT i personaly recommend the X1600, why?? because if you can get a laptop with it, why bother dealing with a 7400 which is half as powerfull than the X1600. The X1600 will definately last you 3 years, every year you will havta slow drop settings to play games and then finaly, do what i do, everything set to low, once your 3rd or 4th year comes LOL.

If i were you wait till both models are out and then pick or just go with the W3J, as you know it packs the most punch in the smallest package.

    Thanks,

    MysticGolem

well, the sony sz is very similar in specs to the w7j. so i would assume it would get around 3 hours like the sz. maybe better.

MysticGolem, thanks for the advice. Both machines are actually available in recent Taiwan computer exhibition right now. Had a closer look at W7J (only white model for Taiwan), and seems to be nice machine. The sales lady mentioned W7J battery life is shorter than that of W3J.
And to answer Jeebo's question, it has Gigabit ethernet. Price for W7J is about USD1800.

As for me, thanks to MysticGolem's advice, I finally decided to get W3J. ;-)

Man, I'm torn between the W7J, W3J, and the Sony Vaio SZ series. Can anyone ballpark the average battery life on the W3J? I'm waiting for the W7J release to find out its battery life, and I hear that the SZ series averages b/w 4-5 hours

    W3j : 3h with wifi on + bt on + web surfing + word processing + brightness on 1/2-1/4.
3,5h with wifi off, bt off, only office work and brightness on 1/2-1/4

Cool, that's some awesome battery life. I've narrowed it down to the W3J and the W7J. After doing some snooping, I've realized for the most part that the Vaio SZ series are quite underwhelming despite their stylish design :\

How much smaller, physically (dimensions plz), is the W7J than the W3J. I've been trying to get the most power out of best form factor, and if the W3J is only slightly larger I might just have to get one over the W7J, unless the W7J has better battery life that is :)

depends on what you need and your preferences.
    size (screen real estate, portability)
graphics (nvidia go7400 vs. ati x1600)
    looks (white/black vs. aluminum)
    features (webcam vs. modular bay)
    price

So what's this about the second battery compartment on the W3V and how much extra battery life will adding another battery churn out? Asus needs a battery like Lenovo that gets around 8 hours of use from the X60s 8 cell battery

Since this has been "officially" released in Taiwan, I wonder how much longer it will be before we start seeing some online retailers offering it here in the US? Does anyone an idea? I've been looking for a place to preorder it but it seems that no retailers even have the W7J on their website.

I'm trying to stop myself from buying a new W5F and wait for this since for about .5 pounds more you get a dedicated graphics card and bigger screen. Is there anyone else stuck between buying a W5F or waiting for the W7J?

Jeebo, the modular battery will prolly output 1 hour, and max 1.5 hours.

So the total batterylife of the W3J is something like 4 hours to 5 hours depending on settings.

To me the modular bay is important, so if i were to make the choice between the W3J and the W7J, W3J wins, plus the nice GPU :D (im a gamer).

    Thanks,

I've found one French site that claims to have the W7J in stock and ready to ship in "1 to 5 days" selling it for 1910.00 euros. It looks pretty legit to me:
    http://www.actualis.com/app/article?ref=ASUSW7J3P008P&pid=Y2x1Ymlj

This notebook has launched in Taiwan people!! I'm sure there have to be SOME other sites that are selling it at a premium before it's readily available. Has anyone found anywhere that let's you preorder yet?

    I want this thing badly.

Does anyone know what materials are used in the construction of the W7J? Is it likely gonna be that plastic/carbon material that Asus' uses on all their laptops, I was hoping for aluminum....at least for the lid

    re: w3j modular battery.
perhaps a w3v/z63a modular battery would work? one of the retailers should be able to help you there. it makes little business sense to develop brand new batteries for a refresh...

    re: french site.
the site looks quite tacky. the image is photoshopped from the CeBit photo... if they really had it, taking a picture wouldn't be so mcuh work.

    re: w7j materials.
composition appears to be very similar to the W5, S5 series, without the glossy coat. the black cover looks like the V6 lid, and that one was a magnesium composite, right? carbon fibre chassis for sure, judging by the weight/dimensions.

You dont know the french that well..lol
When I arrived here I was really surprised at the lack of quality that the average french website had, it was like steping back in time 5years or more. The atitued is if the info is there then thats all that matters, there is wine, cheese and bread to be eaten,

There are actually at least 3 french stores now listing the W7J
Now I just have to decided between this and the new macbook.

I'm really close to pulling the trigger on an SZ, so I hope this thing comes out soon before I do. The Macbook is nice...just one pound heavier than the competition and it also lacks a dedicated graphics card.

Has anyone found any American retailers taking preorders? I can't seem to find any. Strange how the French seem to be getting this before everyone else.....or do they usually get Asus products earlier?
