I have always wanted an IBM thinkpad just for how well they are made, metal chasis, best keyboard you will ever type on. I dont even think any company can compare really. But the only downfall, is that "when not on sale" they cost an arm and a leg and it was out of my budget for what you get.

So thats why I chose ASUS. More value, good build (though not as good as IBM). But for someone like me who doesnt commute with their laptop everyday, it would have been a waste of money paying extra for an IBM when its just sitting in the house most of the time, right? If I was travelling with it a lot I most likely would have saved up more and got one.

That being said, I would still like to get one eventually in the future. Because from what I was told, once you go thinkpad you will never go back to any other brand laptop. Their feel is like desktop feel, made like a tank.

certain models from asus have a better fit and finish than thinkpad. V6va and the w2v the new lambo series coming out.the only good thinkpads are the T series and the new widescreens most the other ones arent really that good. but even so when i worked in IT we only used thinkpads and they broke just as easily as any other laptop.

But those two models are also very expensive. out of my price range.

Thinkpads arent the best looking but they are tough. You want tough, how bout panasonic toughbooks, wow....

You pay for what you get. just like the V6Va and W2v are pretty much T series quality. but dont fool yourself. You drop a laptop on something hard like tile or concrete and its done gone. at least the LCD. IBM has alot of good qualitys i actually really like the styling on them. but they arent the most features. tough books are good but lacking in graphics and dvd burner. its all what you need. IBM is more bussiness boring design. Most the LCDS they use are just plain medocre.with the exception of flexview and the new widescreens lcds with the 300nits brightness or whatever it is.

Yip thats right. And thats why I found no need in investing into an IBM if its used as a DTR. Im sure you would do the same too, that would just be silly. Besides a 17'' IBM would cost too much. For the same price in ASUS, I got faster HDD, dedicated video, etc.

Cost really isnt a factor for me and i still have bought 4 asus in a row. Im wondering though how IBM will do with their new low budger consumer line.

i currently have an IBM T20 in near mint condition.

Im also looking to buy a new laptop this summer. I looked at the IBM/Lenovo T series and found that they are very overpriced for the hardware they offer and none of them offer an nvidia based video card.

so im looking at asus models now. which look much much better, are prolly engineered a little better too. Also heard that since lenovo took over, thinkpad quality is going down..

R series? IBM still has the best build. Ive never owned one before but typed on one and they are delicious. WOW the keyboards on those things, no flex at all...rock solid like gold.

I never said ibm wasnt the best build. i said they were. The T series and the new widescreens are great the lower models are ok. but they are about to introduce a sub 1 grand budget series.

I'd rather have an A or Z series Asus notebook than a C series Lenovo notebook...

IBM makes the highest quality with Asus very close behind. I always count IBM out because they are just too expensive. Asus balances quality and price perfectly.

The V6 series is pretty bombproof, and real slick-looking too. The Z/W series is also excellent IMO. I'm eagerly awaiting the new Z35 myself.

The Z series varies... although overall, I'd say the best built Asus notebook is either the W2 or V6. Both of those would definitely give Lenovo a run for its money in terms of overall build quality...

currently the only ibm/lenovo laptop worth getting (imo) is their tablet, which is apparently reaaally nice. i had a friend who was initially going to be getting an ibm for school but i told him to check out some of the asus laptops and he switched. the price/performance ratio of ibm isnt worth it, especially as a student.
