Sorry if this topic has been beaten up over and over, but my laptop is coming today and I have three options for security services:

    Symantec

    McAfee

    Trend Micro

Any clear winner here? I know one thing from the fellow forum users here (thanks!), Norton that comes installed with my ASUS G1S is going bye bye... too bulky.

oh yeah, is ZoneAlarm firewall good for Vista users? When I had a XP desktop, it worked ok to me?

I don't know either of those antivirs, but I recommend the most lightweight one, whichever that would be.

Firewall: isn't that built into Vista?

Of the 3, I'd pick TrendMicro. Norton and McAfee are resource hogs.

avast, avg, antivir, are all rather decent free programs that work under vista. AOL's active virus shield is another amazing one (it's basically a renamed kaspersky 6.0) but it doesn't have vista support yet.

The paid antivirus scanners are typically slightly better though - such as eset or kaspersky.

BTW, as I mentioned in your other thread asking this same question :p Norton 2007 is supposed to be less bloated now, try it out and see.

I use Kaspersky Internet Security 6.0 in my Vista installation. Making the Vista a bit slower though.

Not as much compared to the other two IMHO - I've used them all.

My favorite is whichever one uninstalls Vista, and installs Win2000 (or XP Pro) in its place.

You should've gone for the MBP like I did :p

That said, I'm still going to have NOD32 on my Vista partition on my MBP.

    BTW....NOD32 v3.0 is the slowest release...ever!

thanks for all the advice... think i'll use a combination approach... that is:
    - yeah i'll see how norton is for a few days (or less)
    - if it sucks, then im downloading trend micro, can get it free from my employer.

    thanks :)

oh yeah, got my g1s. dunno wtf people are talking about re: appearance... other than the lime green lights, the thing is PRETTY and well built.

much classier than the alienware i was considering (not to mention MUCH better bang for the buck)

actually, in looking at vista as it already has firewall and spyware protection... do i need to add anything else other than anti-virus?

before i discovered this, i was planning on installing zone alarm firewall and some third party spyware program.

    thanks.

If you are going to try a few, you have to give nod32 a go, it has a free 30 day trial. and runs using minimal resources.
