I was just wondering how reliable ASUS notebooks are. I am planning on getting the S96J pretty much maxed out on specs for $1800. My dad thinks Dell has the only computers that rarely crash and is trying to convince me that everything else is crap. I was also looking at a XPS 400 desktop from Dell though. Would anyone recommend it over the ASUS or is a notebook that much better to have?

How can a Dell be any different to an ASUS in respect to "rarely crashing"? If they both have the same Operating System I "believe" they will have the same crash rate depending on your usage...
BTW, I think your dad just knows that the Dell is cheaper......
Go for the :asus: -
He trusts Dell over the other big name companies like Sony, Toshiba, HP, etc as well?
My dad's having the same problem trusting Asus too...I'm just trying to explain to him ODM (well...he understands it...he just has to get used to it haha) -
All I can suggest is that you ask your father if he trusts companies like Apple and Sony in regards to build quality and reliability. When he says yes, tell him that Asus makes these machines.
Then point him to the myriad of design awards that Asus has won... -

Have your father read Dell's Customer Service record and then ask him if he still thinks Dells don't crash. Crashing is just the beginning of the problem they have...getting something done about it can be a horror story!
Then, as TedJ suggests, take him to see the 71 Awards won by ASUS in 2005. Drop the menu down and select 2005 so that it displays those awards. ASUS is a global company with 58,000 employees and a long history of producing the best motherboards in the industry, as well as many other top quality computer products.
Then, click on the link below in my signature "ResellerRatings.com Lifetime Customer Satisfaction Rating = 9.99"
While you are on the ResellerRatings.com site you can also check out other ASUS dealers like DiscountLaptops, Geared2Play, ProPortable and many others...
You will then have a convert -
Um, the maker of the PC does not determine whether it "crashes" or not. Issues such as design and customer service come with the brand. Ill admit that ASUS's tech support is ok, but dell's is horrible.
Exactly as paladin said, the retailers that you buy from are smaller companies that can answer fundamental questions easily and remotely, while ASUS actually deals with the replacements and warrenty issues. (Unless its built on ASUS, etc.) -
Crashing usually has to do more with a software problem... And thats where windows comes in... The S96j is a great notebook for the money! Acer has a notebook out there for a good price too with the X1600. Like under $1100. But the build quality of Acer's are not as good as Asus noteoboks. I'd say Asus is one of the best notebook makers out there. You just can't go wrong with an Asus.

Paladin: You should ask the mods to make this a sticky titled 'How to convert people to ASUS' or something similar...
. I think there are these kinds of questions every few days, and the sticky should be able to help out.

I can tell you firsthand that dealing with Dell's tech support and customer service can be very frustrating. It can take multiple attempts to solve a problem, and even then you can get nowhere.
I highly recommend you buy from a well-respected reseller like powernotebooks.com and reap the rewards from their spectacular service. -

I've seen the commercial. Since she's cute, so I forgive Asus for all the inconsistencies.
