Asustek Computer is set to reach its projected shipments of 7-8 million notebooks for 2007, buoyed by new shipments of notebooks to Dell starting June, according market sources. Additionally, Asustek is also expected to launch a series of low-cost notebook-style PCs based on Intel's Classmate PC platform in the second half of this year, further pushing Asustek's total PC shipments, according to an April 16 Chinese-language Commercial Times report.
Asustek's planned notebook shipments to Dell are expected to start at a rate of 120,000 units per month, with the volumes likely to increase in line with the peak seasonal demand in the second half, the sources indicated.
Asustek's current shipments of 13.3-inch MacBooks will last until November, brining in the company's total shipments of MacBooks to about 2.5 million units in 2007, after shipping about 700,000 units in the first quarter, the sources noted.
Of this year's projected notebook shipments, Asustek aims to ship five million own-brand models, as compared to the 2.74 million units it shipped in 2006, according to company sources.
Asustek plans to launch five Classmate PCs, to be fitted with 7-inch LCD panels from AU Optronics (AUO) and SSD (solid state disk) drives with memory densities varying from 1GB to 40GB priced at US$199, US$249, US$299, US$399 and US$549, respectively, the Commercial Times reported without naming sources. CPUs and chipsets for the Classmate PCs will come from Intel, the paper added.
