i searched on internet for a very long time and decided to choose one of the following laptops. But, I am not sure to buy which of them.
1. ASUS F3JA AK038H (core 2 duo T7200, 2 GB RAM 667 MHZ, 120 GB HDD 5400 rpm, ATI x1600 256MB dedicated+ 256MD shared graphic card + 2 year warranty)
2. Dell Inspiron 6400 (modified) core 2 duo T7200, 2 GB RAM 533MHZ, 120 GB HDD 5400 rpm, 256MB dedicated graphic card + 2 year warranty)
I will be happy if you respond to me.

Definitely go for the Asus.
Its GPU is much better than that of the Dell you are considering to buy.
The RAM is faster.
You will get much better performance.
Plus, it doesn't look as "industrial" as the Dell does.
PS: This is what you get when you post in an Asus lovers' forum. LOL -
it really depends on how much you can spend. I dont know a whole lot about the F3JA but the asus is probably going to cost a solid $500 more than the Dell. and if you can find coupons for the Dell (WHICH YOU CAN) it will be even less.
depends what you need, what you wan't and what you can afford. -

You will get a really nice notebook with the Dell. Lots of people say this, but my roomate and most of my friends have Dells, and they just aren't on the same level. Their notebooks creek when you pick them up, and some of them are only a month old, my V6j is 6 months old and has never creaked. The extra money is an investment in your future, and it isn't a very risk one.

I can atest to that my laptop(which i am upgrading verry soon!) is a 3 year old dell and it creeks more than my grandpa does
-
Just curious is the F3ja and the F3jm of the same build quality?

The newer dells to be very well built.
I've dropped my inspiron twice from a 3 feet hight (while still in a laptop bag) - not a scratch/dent on it -
I heard of some guy with a 12 year old Asus laptop, which he dropped down two consecutive flights of stairs, and it wasn't damaged at all except for a few minor scratches.
My vote: Go Asus. You won't regret it. Although you could get an Asus laptop similar to an F3 for a lower price, but the F3 is fine if you've got the money. -

I just wanted to point out that Dells are quite well made now.
They are quite big & heavy though -
I agree weatetheborg. Dells have improved a lot, and I think will continue to improve. Michael Dell realized what his company was lacking (quality and good customer service), and he poured in millions to save his company. I think his investment is finally showing some progress
-
yea dells do last a long time and their build is decent. My little brother uses a 8 year old dell laptop for ms word and such, not bad really. Its just that compared to a Asus's midline laptops you would have to get a upper level dell.

toolmaster brings up another good point - its not fair to compare inspirons with Asus laptops, latitude/xps/precisons would be a fairer comparison.
I got the M90 aptop in my sig, new, for <$1700 before tax, 3 year next day onsite warranty (with dedicated CSRs). Laptop is built like a tank. Asus could never match that price/specs.
The latitude D820/D620s seem to be like thinkpads now. -
unless i am mistaken you got a good deal on your m90. the only thing i have against dells latitudes is the poor screen quality other than that they are great business laptops strong reliable and relativly fast
-
just to throw in my bit...
i always thought that the whole dell thing was a little blown out of proportion. to some extent it likely is. but i'm just telling you what i saw...
in my college class, one of the students has a dell xps, not sure which model, its one of the ones where you get to choose a decal for the top. the decal on his was peeling off like mad and he had scotch tape on it. another event that comes to mind is one time when he opened it there was a cracking sound and the hinge cover had popped up. he could immediately pop it back down, but i was definitely not impressed, seeing this as a w3j owner
long and short of it, most dells would probably be fine, maybe he just got a lemon. every manufacturer gets those, i mean even with my w3j i had to send it back initially because of a backlight problem. but i think the probability of getting a lemon from asus is a lot lower than dell. -
of course dell makes ten times as meny computers as asus but that is no excuse in my book. I am looking into geting an asus w3j myself.

First of all, this thread should not be in this forum, but the "What notebook should I buy" forum.
But since the question was asked, comparing Asus and Dell is comparing apples to oranges (unless you're talking about the XPS.) Asus is a high-quality low-production manu, while Dell is an average-quality high-production manu. There is no right answer to what you "should" choose: it depends on needs and budget. Low-medium power needed, low budget: choose Dell. High power needed, bigger budget, choose Asus.
As for Dell quality, I have to also say (from personal experience) it is seriously underrated. Yes they have their fair share of sh*t but all computers do, and that is unavoidable. They're not going to win any awards any time soon but they're certainly on par with if not better than Toshiba, Compaq, Gateway, Acer, Sony and the rest of the mainstream companies. They are all built by Asus, Quanta, Foxconn and the other Taiwanese anyway so it's not like the end result is all that different. -

That only holds if u'r only considering inspirons.
The latitudes/xps/precisions etc are very well built; and generally offer NBD warranties.
Actually, I've heard that the inspiron E1705 is made of the same magnesium alloy chassis as the M90 & the XPSm1710. -

I have played with the "high end" Dells, and they still don't compre to an Asus V6j, maybe its still not a "fair" compaison according to some people because Asus makes higher quality notebooks, but that the whole point of this thread people. Asus makes higher quality notebooks, so poeple reccomend that you buy them.

I have an ASUS F3Jm and I wouldn't change it for the world, well maybe for a WidowPC one, but that's another story ;-)
