You have Z96J, not Z96JS, not Z96JP, I know you have Spanish KB by the serial number you gave me, the boot CD I made for you is the BIOS for your specific model.

There are some models doesn't support WinFlash and your Z96J is one of them, so download BIOS using WinFlash does not work for you.

whar's the date of that one? because I think that's the same that dashboardy gave to me... and It's 1006.001, so mine is more updated ... cause it says it's 1006.002 on winflash, I know I can't use winflash to flash but it still says that version is older than mine.

edit: Just rebooted to check the bios version on boot up and it says 0602, whilst that one is 0601AS... so it would be just downgrading :\

And I'm reading on other forums that S96J bios works with z96J ... should I try to flash it with booting on cd?

Hey, good news!! I flashed the bios with Gentechpc's nero image file you made on the "x1600 grayniness" thread you made, for the s96J 1104. And it worked, I can now access bios, I disabled that frigging option that was annoying me and now the grayness is gone :D :D :D :D :D Thank you so much guys, you're really cool spending time trying to help, thank you so much! ^^

that is good news. it's also extremely weird. if 1104 works, then so should 1201. There's not much difference between 1104 and 1201 so no point in upgrading, but yeah. it definitely makes the gray look better - actually it goes from looking absolutely horrid to looking perfect.

I just formatted and for some reason, I don't know if this has to do with the bios, but now when I boot-up it shows z96JS, because of the new bios, but that's not the problem. I installed the drivers from the cd (except for the vga one) and I want to ask is the multiple processor hotfix necessary? (i didnt use that before) and when I try to install the intel inf update even the newest one from the site, on device manager it still shows alot of unknown base system devices, pci device etc.. and I can't install the omega ati drivers 7.1 (it shows IR update error on setup or something), that I used to install, ( the mobility oficial ones say they can't find a gfx card ... ), has that got anything to do with the bios? should I upgrade to 1201 ?

btw: cpu-z now reports my mobo as z96JS

edit: I just flashed to 1201 with winflash, its working all good, am going to format again now, just to be sure... anyone knows why I installing intel inf won't do anything?

um try the real drivers from here - catalyst 7.2 with latest 32 bit drivers, not OMEGA. I know for my comp (z96Js mobo, but s96j screen) there are 3 unknown devices - ricoh XD, MMC, and SD I think.

Oh, you tried the mobility official ones? and they couldn't find a gfx card. hmm that I would imagine is bad. you'll probably be able to winflash now up to your 1201. found here

Here's a suggestion. download the above ati link (7.2 catalyst) and double click it. it'll extract to c:\ati\.... etc. when the time comes to install, click cancel/no to quit installation. then right click my computer, go to properties, hardware, device manager. then go to display adapter. you should see standard vga adapter. click update driver. then choose to install it manually, and then browse, and go to c:\ati\support\7-2-mobile_xp_dd_ccc_enu_41243\driver\xp_inf This has the setup information for your driver. if it can't find it, then you may have a problem. if that is the case, try this link - it is from intel, hopefully that works for you.

BTW Multiple processor hotfix doesn't seem to change performance with windows xp sp2, but I install it myself. here it is - only 2.2 mb, so not a big deal either way.

may as well see if you can upgrade to 1201. my guess is now u can as your mobo thinks it is a z96js.

Hm.. ok, btw should I install the drivers from top to bottom on the driver cd? Like, cpuhotfix first, then intel inf drivers, etc? and should I install the lateste intel inf drivers from the intel website? Oh and btw, I use Autopatcher XP, so should I install all updates after or before? thx

Okay, I'm starting to get so pissed off... basically I installed everything I need, those oficial mobile drivers worked, everything works fine, but when I rebooted from uisntalling the ati catalyst internet explorer doesnt work... I open it, and it opens the default page, and when I type any url, it appears something like, "the requested lookup key was not found in any active activation context" ... what the hell=?

And on device manager I still get, 2 uknown devices, 1 pci device and 1 usb device ...

um why uninstall ati catalyst? if you're going to do that, don't install it in the first place. you can choose to *only* install drivers. as far as IE7, just uninstall and reinstall it. If you're installing a bunch of things from a fresh install of XP and don't restart each time (when prompted because it's a pain in the a$$) that can happen. PCI device could be RICOH media controller, or perhaps the modem. maybe take a screenshot of your device manager. Reinstall of windows not necessary. but uninstall/reinstall IE7, make sure you restart...
also why autopatcher? just use windows update, it does the job well enough. um also make sure you have .net framework latest w/ security if your reason for uninstalling ati catalyst is because it deosn't work. (needs .net) note that powerplay is a very nice utility w/ catalyst control...

I tried these steps on a S96J, but when it rebooted it took me to "EZ Flash", not Aflash, and just sat there. No keys work, and one box has my current ROM (Board, Ver, and Date) and the Update ROM (Board, Ver, and Date - but all are Unknown), as well as a directory, A:, C:, and D:, none of which I can select.

Is it safe to shut down (using the emergency shut off, the usual button doesn't work)? Maybe I'll try it from a CD next time.

    Thanks.

Yeah I found out the trick worked for some S96J/Z96J but some doesn't work and I don't know why, according to Asus both model not suppose to work with WinFlash, the best way to flash it is use the bootable CD.

So is it safe to shut down from that screen using the emergency shut down?

Sorry if I'm being a bit cautious, but from what I hear it's not good to mess around with the BIOS.
