Hey everyone,
I have a Asus w3v that has served me well through the years. HOwever, now there's something wrong with the LCD screen. When I first boot up the laptop, the screen turns on but with a reddish tint. After about 10 seconds, it just turns off. The computer still works and the image is still there because you can see that everything is being displayed if you shine a light on the screen but it seem like the backlight is just off. I'm not sure why it would look red though when it is on... but in any case i was just hoping one of you would be able to point me in the right direction. Do you guys have any idea what could be wrong and how I could go about fixing it myself?

I would first check to see if the inverter cable is properly seated. It may have become loose, hence causing the issue. If that doesn't work, try reinstall newer graphics drivers from laptopvideo2go (though I doubt this would help, but maybe it's worth a try). Next, try a system restore (back up all your data first
) If those don't solve the issue, it's most likely a hardware issue (this would be my first guess) and you'll need to replace the LCD panel.
-
okay so where do i look for this inverter cable and what does it look like
-
Check new egg... thats always the best first place to go. Ebay has been known to have these misc things as well.
-
The inverter cable looks something like this:
-
It does not look like that. It's a white plastic 2 prong connector that connects to the Inverter board located at the bottom bezel of the LCD monitor. I have a W3V disassembly, unfortunately I did not write a guide for the W3V LCD disassembly. It's simple though.
You might want to look into purchasing a new inverter as well from the official estore@ASUS as long as the LCD panel is working perfectly.

one word it the back light in panel
i had hp that did same thing it what happen when light start to fail short out then turn off -
sesshomaru Suspended Disbelief!
You'll have to replace the ccfl tube.. It's doable, although a little tricky.. The reddish tint is from the end conductors heating up, but not lighting the tube..
-
it not the end connector heat up it ccfl tube fail
then it overvoltage and trip high voltage protector on inverter -
I think it is quite difficult to replace the backlight is it not? At least I would find it difficult since it requires disassembly of the LCD screen itself, which is a tricky business...
If you are not able to replace just the backlight, then you would need a new LCD, and that will likely cost about the same as the current value of the notebook. So you may consider a new notebook instead.
But maybe sesshomaru can point you to a manual explaining how you could replace the CCFL tube. -
So hmm a little bit of mixed comments here. Is it the inverer cable or the ccfl tube or the backlight? again the symptoms are that when I power on the laptop first, it turns on but with a reddish tint and then turns off after 15 seconds or so. Also, the pixels are still there on the screen but the backlight is off so you can't see anything
-
It the CCFL
-
Can't you just rma it to asus?
-
I think since it's a W3 V it's quite old and therefore out of warranty, unless some extended warranty was purchased. If it's under warranty, definitely sending to ASUS is the best option.
-
yeah i had 5 year extended warranty through proportable but they are not in business anymore and Asus won't believe me when I tell them i had 5 year warranty on it.
-
i ordered a new inverter board. hopefully that will fix it. if not, i'm gonna have to try to change the backlight or the whole LCD itself. but the LCD seems to be working just fine since the picture is still on there. it's the backlight that won't turn on
-
okay it's not the inverter board. it is the CCfl tube s some of you suggested. Does anyone know exactly which tube at lcdparts.net would work for the w3v?? I'm not too sure which one to buy
-
CCFL backlight is very hard to replace. You will need to disassemble the LCD panel to access it, and it's a meticulous procedure as there are many layers of film, glass, and the LCD that you need to keep virtually microscopically clean or else it'll show through on the screen.
I would suggest replacing the LCD screen entirely. Infact, I have a LCD screen that I pulled from my previous F8Sn and it's sitting around (it's an LG panel, 1280x768 res), it's compatible with my W3V which I have tested on. PM me if your interested. -
most of the ccfl have acess spot on panel yes it stil diffauctly but don,nt have to take any layer panel apart
-
well yeah i took apart the whole thing and I just want to replace it anyway even if it doesn't come out looking great. I just want to make sure I get the right sized tube
