The performance of the X1700, as compared with the 7700, is lackluster.

    Not sure but....

If all that weren’t enough, the real sweet part of the G2P is its display. The G2P is outfitted with a 17.1” WXGA+ 1440x900 500-nits display with an 8ms response time and ASUS’ Crystal Shine technology. It’s an In-Plane Switching (IPS) TFT LCD, so you can easily read the display at extreme viewing angles: the “sweet spot” is massive on this notebook!

Wow, 500nits, the market standards are under 300nits at the momment...usually less then 300nits. And IPS. Hell yea....

It could have been a greater screen if it did not have Crystal Shine.

Anyone knows when it will be on the market?

Someone explain to me how x1700 = extreme gaming laptop...Im dissapointed. How is that supposed to compete with the dell xps m1710? With a larger chasis, they should definitely be able to fit a more powerful GPU in there...As is, the G2P looks like a fat W2P with a better LCD and some funky gimmicks. I would personally pick the latter. I hope these arent the final specs... :(

Keep in mind that "Crystal Shine" is high brightness, and "Color Shine" is glossy...
but yes, I would agree that if you're going to be staring at a screen for a ridiculously long time (like many gamers do), then glossy probably isn't the best route... but everyone has their own preferences

That's a great screen but the resolution seems a bit low for a 17" size. I guess the lower resolution puts less load on the GPU. It is curious that ASUS only put a X1700 in the G2P, but if the article is correct about it actually having 512MB of dedicated memory it seems to be the only mid-range ATI card (X1600 or X1700) to actually have 512MB dedicated like what nVidia usually does. I doubt the X1700 really has enough power to truly take advantage of that much memory though. At 460MHz core and 495MHz memory they are certainly clocking the thing close to its limits.

If the G2P has a X1700 it seems very likely that the G1P will have a X1700 too since it's unlikely they would put something higher, and even more unlikely they'll put something lower. With the G2P resolution only 1440x900 and the G1P likely having the same resolution (can't really see them using 1280x800) it's unclear what the G2P's advantage over the G1P other than being physically bigger.

I just had a ten point response that got lost by an inadvertent keystroke.... my apoligies for the following as I simply don't have the time or memory to repeat everything.

    1. Asus isn't going to put this up squarely against the W2p, and this configuration would ultimately do that...... This is certainly pre-production and I wouldn't worry just yet......... However, if this is they're planning on running it, I'd actually beg you to worry about Asus as it would be a seriously bad move.... They haven't made many, which either means everything points to it working out in the end.... or, they're time's up and they're overdue to a failure...

    2. I think there's more to this than meets the eye.... I'll buy the ATI card and 512mb VRAM.... but I don't buy the x1700 card.... It's either a cover for an eventual production change which will be a "surprise" upon the first shipment... Basically something that keeps this on the DL until we actually get them........ or it means they're planning on ATI, but the card they're going to use just isn't made yet.... I'm not totally up on what's coming out from ATI, but I would go as far to say the G1/G2 models may be a launching platform for some new ATI card....... If either were a Turion X2 based system - I'd totally believe it based on the AMD's merger with ATI... but at the same time, there has been no reports that AMD would be dumb enough as to only allow ATI gpu's on AMD based systems.....

    3. Asus isn't even planning on bringing the W2p in with a WXGA+ screen because the mistake they made by bringing in the W3j with that screen caused a lot of people to turn away from the model and left a huge amount of stock which forced them to issue a huge rebate.... If they bring the W2p in with another WXGA+ screen... they're likely to see the same failure... it would be ridiculous to put that screen on that AND say a G2p...

    4. All ColorShine panels are also inherently CrystalShine panels...... but not the other way around... There are mattetype, high brightness panels simply calls CrystalShine, but all ColorShine panels are the same highbrightness...... What throws me off sometimes is that they'll sometimes refer to a panel as one or both...... but both have the same level of backlights. This information is probably coming from the reviewer who is pulling up a lot of information and trying to decode it. The W2jb's WXGA+ screen is **** bright... brighter than the previous and brighter than even anything else they make.... which are all considered very bright to start with. This is because the WXGA+ screen they used in the W2jb and most likely the same screen in the review unit has two backlights...... which explain the 500nits.

... Ok, so after reading that, imagine what I had down in the first place!

your pictures were red and aluminum, this one is black and aluminum.

    Different models of the g2p?

and the specs on this would compete with the high end sony AR that has the 8ms ips screen ( 90% likely its the exact same screen)

Only, who owns one of those? I mean Ive actually seen one in real life but the volume of people who buy that thing is really small.

the large size mid range gpu ips screen laptop market for $3k is not actually that big lol this thing will fall like a lead balloon.

There is also the top end toshiba q0smio for a dual backlit 17 inch screen machine. These are not gaming machines they are targeted towards photography and art editting.

Right.... that's another reason I can't see this being a half-assed product... it's going to be expensive, and say it's a $3k machine (I think it'd be a $2,500 machine as is)...... the screen res bump and gpu bump could only add maybe $500.. maybe more.. the difference between $2,500 and $3,000 isn't at drastic for a shopper already in that range compared to a $500 bump on a $1,500 machine which gets up to $2,000....... it's a 20% instead of like a 34% increase.. So I'd say the people in that range are more likely to come up with the extra 20% for the "perfect" system, than someone in the $1,500 range (already on a budget), trying to come up with another 34%.

Oh.. and the pictures I have of the G2p are of the same color and material as this demo....

    crystal shine means 220 nits.

    colorshine means glare coating.

some panels are colorshine and not crystal shine. like the v6j. My what lcd thread is in your asus is going to make all of this clear forever.
Everyone will be liberated finally lol!

This is a sony model the g2p specs remind me of

Theres a more than decent chance that asus makes this computer. I could give you a lot of speculation as to why but I dont feel like looking it up.

Crystal Shine does not mean 220nits, but thats the standard for most notebook LCDs, so its only assumed. The only Crystal Shine notebooks I know of are the Original M6(b)ne/M6v(a) aka Z70v(a) and Original V6v series.

oh ok well were going to go back someday and really get to the bottom of this.

a8js and w3j are crystal shine. Someday though. I dont want to think about it until I have the entire data.

crystal shine actually means bs lol. But Im trying to see a pattern between it and the backlight luminense. As I said once Ive got enough of the lcd stats Ill go compare them to the advertising bs and see if theres any truth to it.

But one laptop project at a time heehee

You're right.. it's BS.... even before the coining or the terms, Asus prided themselves in the higher end displays which had higher brightnesses..... You can come up with your data, but unless you live it, you don't understand it... and even then, I'll tell you it'll still confuse the hell out of you.

First..... "CrystalShine" was first dubbed on the V6v..... the M6n/ne/bn/bne were already retired at that point...

Multiple models are shown as "ColorShine" first and then as "CrystalShine", but I can tell you from experience with these models and others simply shown as "ColorShine" - that their brightnesses are all similiar.... and mind you, all still brighter than the "CrystalShine" V6v.

... Also, depending on what marketing spec you're looking at..... you could see simply ColorShine, or both ColorShine and CrystalShine when referring to the SAME models..... This goes back to the two BIG issues in panels today and COLORshine is of course a Glaretype display... but the point of them is to produce true blacks and therefore simply better COLOR reproduction. CRYSTALshine doesn't make total sense to me, but it's supposed to represent like a crystal clear day - usually BRIGHT - certainly made up by the folks in Taiwan.. but that was the point.....

Anyway, ALL of the glaretype displays have this higher brightness level to counteract the effects of ambient light on the glaretype display (ie: reflections)... so it's a given that they HAVE to be brighter. Now, models like the 17" W2 are starting to get two backlights which are making them even brighter, but putting two backlights like on the W2 - on like an 11" S6 is ridiculous.... If anything, the brightness compared by the human eye between the new W2 and the S6 would look at the same...... there's just more area to light up on the 17" and therefore two backlights come in handy to get the same level of brightness (in this case, it's a bit brighter, but it wasn't intentional).

I wish FiringSquad would have specifically pointed out that this is a pre-pre-production model and the specs will most likely change for the better before launch, instead of just saying 'it won't compete with Alienware'.

Yes well the key point here is that asus uses no lcds not available to other manufacturers.
Asus does not treat their lcds in any unique way.

So how do their lcds have a feature that the other manufacturers do not advertise?

Well... they dont lol. And what is it that they are even talking about? Thats going to be on next weeks in search of episode. stay tuned.

Ok.... XBright, Crystalview, Colorshine... I hate to break it to anyone, but Sony, Fujitsu, and Asus all have a lot in common..... and a LOT when it comes to screens. However, although different panels are used on different models, one common screen naming convension is used.... it doesn't mean they're the same exact panels all the time, or that they're exactly the same. Coatings on the screen vary - as well as the screen protectors..... some of which are actually very unique... Asus and Fujitsu actually have some patents on screen technology as a pair.. and that's use don both of their screens and the Sony's that Asus makes. The rearward part of the panel only says so much about the screen..... and frankly, no matter the maker, they all need to live up to a certain brightness, contract and refresh rate.... so whatever Asus requests... they could get from one of a half dozen makers and it's really going to be the same. What differs between notebook brands is then the specific coating/screen protector that's used... and this has a lot to do with overall thickness/weight and cost/performance......

I'll tell you right now you could even ask the current bunch of wet behind the ears sales staff at Asus in Fremont and if they're head doesn't explode just hearing the question, I'll guarentee a BS answer.. You're not going to get to the bottom of this because it goes deeper than anyone YOU could possibily talk to and in the end, it's also not life changing..... so the effort really doesn't outweigh the gains.

Just as an example.... three panels were used on the W3v last year (I'm sure it's the same this year), but you could put them all next to each other and not tell the difference.... but you could put the units next to other 14" with Hanstar, Samsung, or LG panels and there would be an obvious difference..... that's just an example and obviously not one easily tested.... but in the end, yes, all these companies make various spec'd and priced panels.... but all of them do work like a government bid... Asus puts out the specs they want and they bid to give them what they're asking for...

IF the same lcd, used by a different notebook manufacturer apears different at all, I would need to see proof of that.
    I have certainly witnessed otherwise.

the orignal manufacturer supplies to coating, as in chungwyu picture tubes. the crystal shine, the xbrite colorshine ( those are the glare coating words)

It says so clearly on the manufacturers site. LCD replacement sites list all of these as well as dell true bright, toshiba yadda yadda, averatec way cool lookin, etc etc etc
    They are all the same.

the crystal bright word, perhaps sony hi color, most of the other manufacturers do not use. like dell only uses truebright.

All the manufacturers use a different word for a coating they do not apply.

    http://www.screentekinc.com/hp-compaq-brightview-lcd-screens.shtml

i mean for entertainment click on the left side of the screen talking about x brite and hp brightview and whatever. theres no coating asus puts on the lcds of its notebooks it just has a name for it exactly like the other manufacturers.

I sure as hell hope not, because I have seen some really crappy glossy screens in Best Buy...

Of course the replacement sites are going to list whatever features the screens have, they are selling the screens from the screen manufacturer, which are speced per the laptop manufacturers requirements.

As far as the screen manufacturer sites, they are going to give the minimum information possible to prevent industrial espionage. So they will just call everything 'high gloss' or whatever. That doesn't mean that Dell high gloss is the same as Asus high gloss. They could put a completely different coating/protector on a screen for an Asus contract then they do for another manufacturer, because Asus said so in their requirements.

Well, that simply isn't true, because I haven't see the same coatings even on the screens I know often come out of the same place (ie: Asus - Sony - Fujitsu).... and I certainly know other coatings are complete BS compared to those and infact hurt the sales of Asus' units because people think the dell, hp and gateway screens are exactly what they're getting with an Asus - and that's simply false. However, if you want to believe that, go right ahead. I don't have the time or the will power to "prove it to you", and I would say that the burden of proof is really in your hands to prove otherwise.... I can just see that you already believe something I know know to be completely false - and manufacturer's model numbers aren't going to do jack to prove otherwise......... Like I said, it's all government type bidding that goes into these panels - not the other way around and the one part of the screen that is held to the highest level of secrecy is the of the screen finish.

To put it mildly - Asus used to use what was called an ACEview screen (this is the screen they developed with Fujitsu..... barnone the best screen I've ever used - even beat the IPS model on the V6va - only because the screen protector was actually glass..... which made it both hard and as easy to clean as a window......never seen it before and haven't seen it again because of it's cost (however it will be on the Core 2 Duo Lamborghini Vx1 in a new thinner/lighter form)...... it's certainly not used on any other computer I've ever seen

... In regards to the W2p's resolution... There are two options for the W2' screen and have been for the 14 months it's been available... WXGA+ and WSXGA+.....NO WUXGA or higher.....period.... that's simply incorrect information you're giving Quatre. Now, whether the US will be importing the WXGA+ again or go back to the original WSXGA+ is another story..... Asus loves the color preproduction and brightness of this new WXGA+ compared to the old WSXGA+ screen on the W2v - however, we ended up selling the WXGA+ because Tawain sent the wrong systems over here and then they didn't sell at all until they put a rebate on them to get rid of them. However, they don't want to bring over the WSXGA+ model until they can get a panel in that resolution with two backlights to meet the brightness of this last screen.

im with justin,in that i highly doubt asus will put a 1700 in a 17 inch gaming machine. especially since that is a very slow 1700. if i remember old tests properly, my x1600 in my s96j hit around that with omegas, and the w3j with omegas should pass that. seems to me that a reviewer jumped the gun

It simply comes down to everything that's involved in going that extra mile to create an entirely seperate "gaming series" that isn't meant to compete with any of the other models - I wouldn't put it past them to do something stupid (as said above), but they already have this notebook in the W2...... they NEVER, EVER do anything just for show and basically that's what this pre-production "review" is showing.... In the end, it needs to come to the US and it'll come in whatever configuration it comes in... so waiting to see is the only thing we can do.

... Then agian, we can continue to argue over it and get ourselves no where..... that is fun for a while... but it gets old after a while. ;)

the chinese version of the x1700 has 256 mb and it uses ddr2 ram

so I would guess that the gamer version would use ddr3. perhaps overclocked as well.
Notice they gave us no stats on the gpu when really that is all we want.

So, even if the model comes to market with a x1700, you can have reason to believe that what it is is like 150% or so of the x1600.

Not the chinese version which is just like the x1600

ALL glare coating is done at the factory by the manufacturer of the lcd.

If you are under the impression that the lcd manufacturer ships asus a matte screen and they coat it, you believe in the tooth fairy.

The manufacturing process has the coating before the cutting.

All of the words used by the retailers are "magical" words.

The most recent example I have seen is the dell e1505 and the s96j.

They look exactly the same of course because they are the same screen. The major problem with the e1505 is in how they mount the screen which causes it to leak light more..

When I get my computer and I have more time Ill show you web sites showing the whole process of lcd manufacture and what all the words mean justin, just for your education if you do want to know about it.

But in the meantime all of the websites and the web is there for you to read up on it.

people always ask me to do web research for them on this site, but I dont even own a working computer so I cant keep it organized thats all on you.

To the speficiation of the laptop manufacturer, who just contracted with the LCD company to make hundreds of thousands of screens.

Different laptop manufacturers will have different specifications based on the design of their laptops. Dell will ask for something different then Asus.

It's not like the laptop manufacturer just picks from whatever old junk the screen manufacturer has laying around - they are the customer and can get screens made however they want.

I don't get what's so hard to understand about that...

Just so you know, this isn't an argument.... it's simply a statement and I could sit you down for a week and explain to you everything that happens on the ODM level and you still wouldn't be ready to embark on a conversation on this topic. I don't want you to think I'm being disrespectful or anything, but it may come off that way because you feel you know what you're talking about...... but you don't and it's not something I would expect you or anyone else to really "know", so that's why I feel like I should apoligize... The Z96 is a piece of crap and yes, I don't doubt that it's screen is shared with that dell... it's really not too hard to believe..... however all screens are not the same and certainly - just within Asus every model is different and there is a HUGE difference between Series...

This doesn't make one person buy an Asus rather than something else...... just like it doesn't get someone to buy a Sony over an Asus because of their "xbrite" screens....... Likewise, if the screen is good, it's good... but there are hundreds of dollars between some of the screens.... and others there are just a few dollars seperating them and yet they have different overall specifications......

I'd be interested in seeing what you're reading, so I can at least understand where you're coming from, but any day you can make it out to PA, this is more something you'd understand if you saw working examples of just the different screens in Asus' own models - outside of the systems........ you'll be surprised at what versions look identical and which look like they were made on different planets....

I may actually head down to PA over spring break - I am thinking of taking a trip to visit Centralia, the town with the coal fire under it that provided the inspiration for the setting in the Silent Hill movie.

A friend and I did a mad trip to Cleveland and D.C last spring break... Drove 2000 miles in 5 days... Slept in the car a couple nights, camped in the closed National Park and got kicked out by the cops, all the normal college roadtrip things.

.... ok, but no camping out at my place!

I've heard of centralia and the coal fire of course.... no one leaves there anymore I don't think because of the fumes...... but I'm guessing that's more out towards PSU and state college -- as I'd guess it's in the center of the state. Creepy from everything I've seen and heard, but didn't know it was the basis for Silent Hill.

Well, at home it's legal to camp in the state parks when they are closed. As my friend and I discovered when the cops came and shined lights in our tent at 10pm at night, this does not also apply to national parks just outside of Cleveland. Wal-Mart parking lots, however, are always a good option.

Oh if i were in PA Id take you up on that for sure.

There was a time when the notebook retailers put their own coating on matte screens.

Ok but that was many years ago. When Im not sure, sometime between about 4 years ago and two years ago, a small city state of time. That is the origin time of many of these goofball crystal bright words that dont even apply anymore.

Youre talking about like when hp had a screen coating that was literaly like a half inch thick you could see yourself in. No glare comin out of that thing for sure. Check out a hp screen now its nothing like that.

In some cases what each manufacturer does is create a halo screen using a unique technology, call it crystal view and then when the mass produced screen catches up using a similar technology call it the same thing.

This is taking a page from sonys book, or honestly any TV screen manufacturer this is the gobbdleygook bs they sell and resell forever. crystal black hi def res blah blah.

    Its all bs.

How does the same screen have truebright, cleaview x brite crystal brite soopah doopah brite etc. Do you think they crank out 12 different ones then?

Sad... Asus dare to call it a gaming laptop which is onli half true (true at the keyboard setup but false at the GPU), A X1700 in watever condition will only be a X1700. When i want to look for a gaming notebook, I ll only go back to asus if they had anything better than this.

i've seen on tv about that town with the coal burning underground. i know there is some old used to be mining towns in western and central pa but didn't know that one was near psu.

i go to Penn state all the time for football games and in july for arts fest when state college becomes the third largest town population wise after philly and pittsburgh but didn't know that coal burning underground town was anywhere near psu.

so what the one silent hill movie was like filmed there? the movie wasn't based on the town as the movie is a crazy fantasy scary story, while the town is just some boring town where the coolest thing is some coal burning underground and you can see like hot ember burning material through cracks in the ground where itmessed up the road ina few places or whatever. guess that is kinda scary on its own though as its like hell from below coming through to the surface or something heh.

anyway as far as screens, i have an asus v6j and while its first laptop in awhile, i'm not super impressed with the screen. it has the assus clearbrite or whatever but not the color shine so its not a glossy screen which sucks cus i seem to prefer glossy screens. it is sxga+ though. i think its plus but seen it stated both with and without the plus.

anyway i knew about the v6va with the ips screen and that you can actually get it for the v6j but many said it wasn't so much better then v6j screen adn mostly just gives you a little more greater angle of viewing which you dont need and just allows others to see your screen better in public when you dont want them too id unno.

meanwhile the screen seems a little washed out to me and i know there is diff modes nad brightness settings but i end up having the brightness way up and overall just not as impressed with thescreen as i thought i would be especially after ppl were like you dont need the ips screen of otherwise inferior v6va as v6j will still be the best screen you ever had.

i dunno, the screen adn res is very important to me so getting back on subject i woujld prefer the upcoming very soon W2P with wuxga resolution screen and the same x1700 gpu.

i like the metal looks of the g2p but dont care much for the red lights or the keys. i think you would be able to game just as well on the w2p and have other multimedia capability like hddvd,

so yeah if they want to make a gaming laptop they better ramp up the gpu and screen res factors to start.

I don't think this will be launched with an X1700. The X1700 in the pre-pre-production model (hell, it was probably one of a handful that were hand-built) that Firing Squad reviewed is most likely just a stand-in for another ATI GPU that isn't available yet.

Thanks for the info, I liked the preview in the link, very in depth, looking forward to hear more.

Now with regards to specs of the G2P yah i'm very dissapointed in this pre-production model, if ProPortable is right then this machine will receive new components to make it more competative with the XPS and A-W and Vodoo Gaming laptops.

If the G2P does not get new components then this in my opinion is just a glorified W2 laptop that cost more :(. I also don't like the WXGA+ resolution i would expect 17" laptops having WSXGA+, but that's my opinion.

I'm curious to know what the G1P has in stakes for us, also how will it compare to the V1J since we know the chasis restrictions of 15.4" limits us to X1700 and GO 7700, unless ASUS did something here too.

    Thanks,

    MysticGolem

Honestly, I'm still surprised Asus let FiringSquad do that review without plastering the words 'pre-production' all over it.

If you have or have seen a V6j in the US - it has a ColorShine screen... if it didn't - and it wasn't impressive - then it was either an old V6v (end of life 9/05) or someone put an old V6v screen on a V6j......... which is a REAL ripoff because the V6v screen BLOOOOOOWS compared to the V6j's screen (which is about 95% of what the IPS screen is)... it only lacks the viewing angles.... the IPS is 175-180 both ways... the normal ColorShine is about 160-165...... still a LOT, but that's basically the difference - IPS screens simply have pixels lined up a different way and that increases their viewing angles.

Back to the screen issue above..... We can go on and on and on about this, but I'm not saying Asus puts crap on their screens when they get them in........ the way the screen companies work with the notebook companies is basically - they work FOR them, not WITH them.... They can use patented technologies of Asus' on their screens... while they can do the same with someone else...I could get into the small differences seen between some Asus screens and some Sony screens...... and yet 90% of them are the same model..... and 90% of the Sony's are still made by Asus...... so how do we explain this? I'm not buying anything else because I've seen the information that completely debunks your theory - but it's one of those things that actually secret and if I share it I certainly won't be sharing any other information....

    I see.

Maybe FiringSquad didn't know that they had as pre-production model or they did and didn't feel like telling us because they were told not to. Hence the G2P specs would be different and better than this.

    Lets hope :p

    Thanks,

Well, if they were told not to say anything - they certainly wouldn't just say the unit they had used an x1700 ---- w/o being forces to say it was pre-production...

Oh well if the g1p is actually a asus s96j with wasd keys its too poser for words.

I actually penciled in the same x1700 card for it. the 512 mb dtr version at least.

True... and I don't think that's going to happen... agian - too much time and effort into a totally seperate series meant to target the one group of people they haven't won over yet... and those are people who know what Asus is capable of - but also know they don't make super high end gaming machines... so the only reason to go to the extent of making a gaming series - would be to go at it 110%... We'll see what happens.
