If I upgrade from the 5400RPM one to a 7200RPM will the heat be a problem? As in will the heat end up frying the HDD. And is it worth it to do so? I'm afraid of the risks of having the HDD burn out on me.

The 7200 will not generate enough increased heat in the W3 chassis to reach temps high enough to disable it. But, higher rpm = higher operating temps generally speaking, so the palmrest above the HD will likely be warmer than with the stock 5400, and your system/HDD temps will probably be a bit higher too (but still within operating tolerances).

So upgrade or not to upgrade? Actually I plan on getting it customized, but still.

Is there a big difference between the 7200 rpm and the 5400 rpm? How much faster is the 7200?

It depends on what your doing... If your editing large video files, they 7200RPM will help you load them faster. It also helps load games, and any other software faster. You will be fine with the 7200RPM drive. Any notebook can support a 7200RPM HD. It might add a couple of degrees more heat, but its nothing to worry about. But, if your just a basic user who goes onto the internet, chats, listens to mp3's etc. You will not see a difference between a 7200 and 5400RPM HD.

There won't be much of a heat increase. Certainly not enough to cause any harm. The day I got my notebook I swapped in a 7200 RPM drive.

You know...I say don't swap while it's under manuf. warranty...after it expires, go for it. The prices will prob. come down too (or if you monitor sales...etc, you can find the best one in time)

Whenever the comp it is pulling from the HD (as has been said - video editing, accessing files, pics, that type of thing from the HD), it will be faster - we're not talking leagues faster though...

Will it be noticeable? Tough to say. Sometimes yes, sometimes no...the heat increase will be a constant though.

I don't think removing the hard drive will void the warranty... it's easily accessible. They allow you to put in a second hard drive so... yeah.

    AND GO HEAT!
