Oh, no! As if comparing notebooks were not already complicated, now I realize that there are two different companies with almost the same name! Which was the second one, that named itself so similarly?

I have been studying specs, and as my notebook criteria have been narrowing down, I have come to the place where I want to know about manufacturer reliability. It all sounds good on paper, but I want to buy lasting quality as well.

So, my purpose in finding this forum (and thank goodness I found it!) was to check and see all was well with what I thought was just one single manufacturer called Asus. Their product sounds good, but their website is pretty poor for a company that is supposedly expert in computer savvy—some of their very own products don't come up in Search. Maybe they make excellent products but don't know much about websites?—makes me nervous.

But now I might as well ask both questions at once: Acer and Asus—do they both get a good overall recommendation from you folks in the know? And was the second one purposely copying the name, hoping maybe Toyuko cars might sell well? Thanks.

Yeah, the ASUS website isn't great, but fear not at all, ASUS wins over Acer is virtually everything. Better design, better quality, better specs. I absolutely recommend ASUS, but Acer is just another Dell, in my opinion (cheap computers, low quality).

Actually, the name ASUS originated from the word Pegasus, which the founders wanted to call it, but they dropped the "Peg" (so it became <strike>Peg</strike>Asus) in the end. So it wasn't based on the Acer name, it was based on the word "Pegasus".

And in the fact the founders of ASUS were former Acer employees.

ASUS was founded by four ACER engineers.
ASUS in my experience has better build quality and reliability than ACER computers. Just wiki ASUS and you'll find out company history and everything =]

I like the Asus website, I find the Acer website a poor joke, Much like the quality of their machines, We had Acer laptops in Highschool, They were trash. My mum has a Acer and its screen is so aweful, the keyboard design makes no sense at all (Its shaped like a smiley face so all the key alignments are out) And the bezel in front of the space bar is higher than the space bar so key strokes dont register alot

Asus and Acer are pretty much the opposite ends of notebook build quality and reliability, from what I've read and in my opinion. Asus makes some of the best computers out there and Acer makes some of the worst.

Asus more better than Acer ^_^, specially in built technology and laptop specs but not in the prices.

Oh come on people! Acer is not that bad!!! The new 5920G is fairly problem free!

Well, anyway Asus is not some cheap copycat. It's a really large company in Taiwan and offers some of the best and most reliable laptops.
