On my zenbook, it's really annoying to have to hold the fn/function key while pressing F5 or F10 or whatever to adjust volume and brightness. It takes 2 hands, or a really weird stretch for 1 hand. Are there any utilities to re-map those function keys so that I don't need to hold down the fn function key?

Sorry if this is covered already, the search doesn't seem to work.

I saw the "Asus notebook keys, v1.3" thread but it wasn't clear if that's what will work (if anything). Anywhere else to look?

I don't have my Zenbook yet but I'd like to know if it's possible too :)

Here's what I got :p (the quote below here)

No, the keys are bound to some wmi-interface that's invisible to the hardware layer. It's possible to circumvent it and bind specific keys and functions with nbkeys, for example. But since we don't really know the functions these keys launch via the atk-keys package, you have a choice between adding your own custom function and losing everything else. Or else just bearing with it.

But I'm sure that this would change if enough people write Asus and suggest they should improve how this is done. That we should either have the osd/atk functions and the wmi-interface documented. Or get a menu of some sort to add custom functions.

I mean.. that would be really useful. So their product would be better, with very little extra effort.. right? So there's no reason they shouldn't do that.

Asus' reply was basically we will not help you in any way. If you feel like writing a summary of the content of the e-mail, we allow that, you can't just copy messages word for word.

I had dedicated buttons on Dell for years. I search them on every laptop since. That was the best idea, anything else seems too complicated. How hard can it be to have like 5 buttons working in order to make a lot of people happy.

Since the windows volume up/down keys are generic, you can remap it if you don't mind losing the Fx key you map it to:
Brightness is platform-specific, so that is why it can't be done the same way.
