Here you have some pictures of this black sticker, which was the reason why the hdd didn't wanted to start correctly. Sorry for bad quality.

Thanks for the Pics of the black sticker, it looks interesting.
Anyways, the thing about the warranty is that when you buy an ensemble unit, you basically get 1 year warranty on the entire unit, (some cases 2 years).
So if you take an ensemble unit and change the HD or RAM, the warranty is still the same but different in one sense. For example i go and buy a Seagate HD and put that in place of the one that comes with the ensemble, (fujistu).
So the fujistu still has one year warranty, but when you buy a seagate HD you get 3 years of warranty. So now your ensemble still has 1 year warranty on the whole unit including the taken out fujistu HD, plus a 3 year warranty on the Seagate.
So now many will change the ram from Nanya (RAM for ensemble units) and get something like Corsair Ram, which has life time warranty. So now your Nanya ram has 1 year warranty but ur Corsair ram still has life time warranty plus the rest of the laptop has 1 year warranty including the fujistu HD and the Seagate which has 3 years warranty.
Hence when you buy a Barebone laptop (BOA model) you technically get more out of your warranty than an ensemble unit because you get full warranty out of each component you buy, rather than one big warranty that covers the whole thing (which has it upside too).
I hope you guys understand that

1. Seagate has a 5 year warranty
2. Please read these threads http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=16289 and http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=56222
3. Yes, ASUS will be able to tell that you have moved the "sticker" from one hard drive to another and then back again. -
Hey Mastha212,
I was thinking of upgrading the drive in my W3J to a new segate 5400.3, how is your one running? I was wondering why did you not get a larger drive than 100gb?
was it just cost or does anyone know if the W3J will support a 160gb drive? -
I have a bad Hitachi 5400. Z71v starts fine even with bad HDD.
-
I believe w3j only supports SATA drives and there is no 2.5 160 GB SATA drive yet. I have the PATA 160 GB drive which I used in w3v before I sold it and it was great. Too bad I wont be able to use it on a new Asus if I end up getting one soon.

After upgrading my LT to a new Hitachi 7K100 80 gig, I will never buy another LT with out a 7200rpm drive in it. You never know how much time you waste waiting on a slow hd. I don't see the logic. Yes the 7200 rpm drive uses 100ma more (10%) than a 4200, but you double the speed of your system. So you net 80% . Not a bad trade off if you ask me.
-
You will be able to use it, if you check the images preveiously posted on this thread you will see that the drive is a PATA connector
but the bonus being that if it works in the W3V it will surely work in the W3J
here is a pic of mine when I upgraded the ram, it is definately a PATA drive.
I would like to hear from someone who has a 7200rpm drive, I have checked out a couple of reviews, they are very apealing!! -
The connector is 100% PATA. I got 80GB cause i simply don't need more space. Besides I didn't have much money so the 80 was the only option. And about the hdd : it runs perfect, it's really fast (I put here some screens to compare to 7200 hdd and Momentus is only a little slower) and VERY QUITE. I'm very happy with this change.

Yea.. I'm planning to get the 160GB 5400.3 Seagate HD also.. But I don't know if the W3J's BIOS will support it. Has anyone installed this in their W3J yet?

It may be best to email asus regarding the 160gb hard drive support, and for the record as many said already the W3J is PATA.
We know the W3J can take up to 120gb, but you know when the laptop was released there may not have been any 160gb HDs for ASUS to test anyways, so it may just work?
Not sure, and may cause damage or something by putting it in...
Thanks,

It seems to be similar a desktop computer. Asus would take a test for a HD, then update a lastest version of BIOS. After upgrading it, the HD can be detected by BIOS. We have to wait for the offical release from Asus website, otherwise, make a call to Asus technical support to mention them about the issue, they will follow up this in advance.

I am sure it will, if a 160 runs in a W3V you can be quite certain it will run in the W3J

FYI... I just installed a 160gb Seagate 5400.3 Perpendicular Drive
and it works fine, it was easy, just pop the drive in and use the Asus recovery discs, I am just going through the rest of the setup now. -
Thanks for the confirmation. Where did you purchase it from and for how much? Did you upgrade from the stock 5400.2 100GB Fujitsu HD? If so, do you notice a performance gain? Does it run quieter and how much more/less heat does it emit? Do you know if there's a 120GB version out?
Sorry for the million ?s ..I'm planning to purchse this soon, and I wanted to know if it's worth it.

Awesome.. thanks for that response. Newegg had a special price of $204 for it just the other day, so I was about to purchase it, but I still wasn't sure if it was worth it. The price is back up again to $214 at Newegg from checking today. But that's still cheaper than when it first came out. I'm a big fan of Seagate HDs.. That's all I've used in my old desktop, and my Asus Z70va. The Fujitsu I have in my W3J is making a clicking noise. It's not bad at all, but I've been spoiled with the quietness of Seagates, and I do need the extra HD space for all my games and music.NZwaverider said:I had a quick look online and the cheapest place was Dell! it was $248 USD which I thought was quite cheap compared to how much I have paid for HDDS in England and Thailand. But from reading user reviews, they have dropped in price significantly since they were first released
I read a few reviews and it states that the 5400.3 slightly faster than the 5400.2 Seagate 100gb (which I actually have two that I brought from Thailand in Feb this year they were 7000 thb each) and considering when I tested the Seagate 5400.2 (100gb) is faster than the stock Fujitsu, so the new 5400.3 Seagate is deffinately faster (I have only tested with a basic speed utility).
Noise wise, it runs quiet, but the Fujitsu is not really niosy, so the diff if any is negliable, they both run quiet.
Heat, it actually runs a bit cooler than the Fujutsu, after two hrs its sitting on 47 deg, I hope to play around with some video encoding, so will see after a lot of activity how hot it gets.

yes they do have 100, 120 and 160gb models
"The results here are actually quite better than I had expected. Throughout all of the tests, the 5400.3 only proved near 5% slower."
Quote from review and if you were wondering it was 5% slower than a 7200rpm 60gb Hitachi!!!
I actually saw another review that posted power consumption in the reviews, it was against a 4200 rpm Fujitsu and the seagate 5400.3 actualy used less power!
Anyway, I just wanted a bigger internal drive, that runs quick and is not as power hungry as a 7200 (which I nearly purchased untill I saw the power consumptions in a review).
Do it... do it now......

Yeah I actually looked around about a week before I brought it and found it for 186 at buy.com, but the same thing happened to me, I went back a few days later and the price had gone up and by that stage I needed it quickly
