Sorry to hear it...... but what are you expecting people to say? It's sort of hard to scratch your lcd screen without it being your fault.... if I knew what made the scratch, I might be able to help you make it less noticable.
Let me know.. and again... I feel for you.... how'd you do it? -
Sexybeast, I'm really sorry to hear this. It really sucks when you purchase something that you had your heart set on, saved for, sacrificed for, and it gets damaged. Happened to my new car last summer. Two months old, dented the rear quarter panel. Bawled my eyes out.
How big is the scratch, how deep, are you certain that it is a scratch? Does it affect your panel's ability to display color? Any idea how it might have gotten damaged in the first place? That is pretty important in determining if it would be eligible for the warranty to kick in.
If it is damaged to the point that it will bug you to no end, it may be worthwhile to consider sending it off for repairs and have the panel replaced. I know a couple hundred can hurt, but if it's worth your peace of mind then it is probably worth it in the long run for the sake of your sanity.
Please don't take this as a condescending statement, but understand that "it's not the end of the world." Take a deep breath, figure out what might have happened, and let's look at your options. -
So what can I do? I am absolutely depressed right now. I feel I might be better off selling this ASAP, but i would lose a lot of money. -
Ouch. How did you scratch it? Pets maybe? Younger brother? An infant in the house?
Dayam. Don't worry you can have the screen replaced for something like 500-700. My friend broke his cousin's M6bne's screen and he got it replaced for about 700.
Cheers,

Im so upset. Its about 1.5cm, hairline, its very thin, just looks like a piece of hair stuck to the monitor. -
-
http://www.mobilityguru.com/2006/02/24/how_to_replace_a_broken_laptop_or_notebook_display/page2.html
For about $100 you can get it replaced with a new one. -
Im pissed, just pissed right now. $2000 down the tubes, thank you jesus! ****in christ. -
OR.... just buy a bigger external widescreen LCD and use it as your primary monitor. Make a dual monitor setup. Ignoring the scratch will be easier since you'll be spending more time on the bigger LCD.
Buy an external wireless keyboard and mouse so that you can use your ASUS as your desktop PC. -
A hairline scratch might be able to be polished out to the point that it won't be as noticeable. It happened to my PDA when I first had it, and I took some turtle wax and polished it up and it was unnoticeable. I don't pretend to tell you that's what you should do in this case unless someone more knowledgeable than me can certify that turtle wax or the like won't scratch your screen. But if you are strongly considering replacing it, it might be worth a try first to see if it can decrease the noticeability of the scratch to a point where it would be acceptable.
-
Should i just sell it? I dont know. Im tempted... -
I dont know yet, or should I just sell it? I think it would be hard knwing theres a mark on it and I might only get $100. -
Do you really think you would only get $100 for it? Aside from the scratch it's almost brand new.
-
-
I'd imagine that you'd probably get over $1500 for it. If it really is a hairline scratch then it's probably not that huge a deal, so $500 off the price seems a bit much to me. Probably more like $200-$300 off if it still has everything else in like-new condition. You can never tell with folks on ebay, though, so it's still just a guess.

I have a 10.6" Fujitsu subnotebook for half a year and I find that the screen is a bit too small for me.
I bought a primary 17" LCD display and use the 10.6" as my secondary display for a dual monitor setup. All my main windows, icons and taskbar are in the 17" LCD and most of the time for day to day tasks, I rarely look at the 10.6".
I do some programming and found the setup useful since I can put the documentation on the smaller screen and the source codes on the larger screen. I use my notebook's keyboard as my primary keyboard and an external bluetooth wireless mouse.
It's nice to have a dual monitor setup since I can also have one monitor display a DVD movie playing in fullscreen and the other monitor in case someone is messaging me in MSN messenger.
In your situation, instead of turning it to something negative such as selling your precious new notebook on eBay (with depreciated price), make it more functional. You could spend your cash on an external monitor (and have 2 fully functioning monitors) instead of having the screen fixed for about the same price. -
jsis, GREAT SUGGESTION~!
There you go man you could do something like that.
I know how you feel about damaging something brand new, but hey you gotta take responsibility for what you've done and suck it up.
I bought an mp3 player about 2 years ago and it cost me over 300, the sony e something something. I broke the screen on that within 2 weeks. Dropped a 35 pound weight on it while working out.
I was so pissed off, but I was lucky that the Playmode section of the screen was still functional so I could still select playmodes, repeat whatever, and just use it like an Ipod Shuffle, while having the choice of playing things straight through.
Just look at your options and I'm sure one scratch isn't going to ruin your experience with your laptop.
Cheers,
Mike -
I will take pics of the scratch and see what you all think. Like I say, it looks like a piece of hair on my screen.
I dont know if i wanna pay to fix it, ill see. If I sell, i will take a big loss. -
honestly, you said it just looks like a hair is stuck to your screen right? If it's that small and that thin...i think you should suck it up, no use trying to sell it off, sucks that's it's scratched but it's not worth taking a few hundred dollar hit to sell it and buy another one. You'll get use to it eventually.
-
If its just sitting on your desktop all the time. I would get a second monitor. Or you can sell it to me for 10$. Dont scratch your second monitor if you do get one.
*Note to self no tools around notebook LCD. -

You guys have to stop treating your asus laptops like they are your brand new ferarri. S****e the sand of your genitals and act like a man. Jesus how old are we here.? I feel like laughing but this is just a sad case of drama. I cant stand drama. If i wanted drama i would go talk to my mama.

I've got to agree with G2P here. Crying over a notebook isn't worth it. Just chalk it up to experience...live and learn. I guarantee next time you will be more careful.
These units are meant to be used after being thrown in a bag,and jostled repeatedly while running to your flight. And then take slight impacts when you set your bag down and pick it up repeatedly. They should not need to be babied. -

Eddie, you're reminding me of Gunnery Sergeant Hartman from Full Metal Jacket. (One of the best movies of all time, by the way.)
Spooky that you mentioned pulling out the spark plug wire 'cause I've done that before on my old 89 Ford Probe. Stuff like that happens to me so often, I've learned to live with it. Kinda freeing, in a way. Once the first scratch gets on your notebook or new car or whatever, then you can stop babying it and treat it like the tool that it is. -

Lol i cant say i have any military training but i did pledge for a frat that was comprised mostly of enlisted people.
Only mentioned the spark plug cus i yanked the wire out with the head of the spark didnt know that was possible before i buter fingered. Needless to say removing it was an ordeal but i never blamed gm for manufacturing a defective plug. -
Lol. It's funny, because my z70va is relatively new and it's already got a chip in the silver lining near the front. I was pissed that it happended, but I didn't cry about it, nor blame Asus or G2P for it. I like to keep my things in good condition too, but like Eddie says, "Sh*t happens!"
-
LOL... I gotta agree with Eddie and others; crying about wear and tear to your notebook is hilarious. Everything eventually picks up defects here and there and sometimes through no fault of your own. Think about it: is that tiny scratch on your LCD that bad that you'd be willing to sell your notebook to someone else at a significant discount?
Sorry about your notebook, but ****... get over it. -

I got up today and some ass decided to take the Pony and GT emblums off my beloved Mustang, right on my driveway no less.
I've been babying that car since I got it, point is, SH*T happens, you're not alone...
Figure out where to go from here and be thankful you have your health, family, etc...and the priviledge of being able to buy a $2000+ laptop in the first place. Take a deep breathe, put it in perspective, and figure out the best way to move forward from here. -
anyways, i could sell this for say $200 less than what i paid and buy a sony vaio which are on clearance right now. WHo knows...
But i wish i didnt spend on such a pricey laptop, i should have got a cheap $700 Acer. Before I had a toshiba (1500) and it was ****. So i thought spending more would be better for me in the long run, but gee was i wrong. Maybe i should have spent less. -

You had it shipped from us with a chip or you put the chip there your self?

Nope, true story. I really wish I could have caught them in the act...but what can you do. It's actually not as bad as I had thought...looks like It's only about $85 bucks Canadian worth of damage, I thought I was looking at 200+!!!
If you can sell it for only $200 less than what you paid for it, why don't you sell it, and buy another new one with the money. $200 is much less than what others were saying an LCD replacement would cost. And since It's such an issue with you, paying $200 bucks might just be worth it??? Then you wouldn't have to worry about the build quality of another brand...and maybe you'll have better luck overall with a different brand new model.
Just a thought. Or you could actually save some money and try out the A7J If you're still looking for a 17 incher. I'm not really into any of the models larger than the V6V, so I don't know much about them...but specs wise you wouldn't be missing much at all...maybe the TV tuner...and you'd have a duo core + the global warranty. I don't know man, think all your options through and do what's best for you. Good luck -
CalibratedComa Notebook Evangelist
I took too long to type that out, getting another ASUS is the way to go!!!
-
If I do sell it, i would get something much cheaper. I dont need tv tuner, i dont need 17'', I dont need X700, I dont need P-M.
I should have just gone with my original intincts and went with a celeron-M Acer or something for like $600. -
oh, and i really do believe that having a 17'' is over rated. i would easily go back to 15.4 or even 12 without any hesitation...and use the extra money you save on an ext. large LCD and run dual monitors for when at the desk.
-

I thought you already looked into your options and were being accurate when you said you could get $200 less than you paid for it.
No offense, but do you have any idea what you want??? You're all over the place here. I'm surprised you bought a $2000+ laptop in the first place. How is it you came to decide on a 17 inch Z83vb?
It just blows my mind when you say
"I dont need tv tuner, i dont need 17'', I dont need X700, I dont need P-M.
I should have just gone with my original intincts and went with a celeron-M Acer or something for like $600."
Anyways,
I wish you all the best, good luck with your decision -
But now that i think of it, will i even ever be able to get the full potential out of my laptop? Probably not. Before I was using onboard and I should have just saved the extra $600 or so and stuck with onboard.
How much you think ican sell it for. -
I doubt anyone would buy it for 200$ under list price, used with a scratch on the LCD. I know if I was looking to get that laptop I would much rather buy a new one without a scratch than a used one with a scratch for 200$ less. Better look into 500$ off.
-
Just sell it and buy a 600 dollar notebook. because as soon as your scratch that one you gonna want another new one. then another then another. or even better just buy a thinkpad with a titanium cover and flewview monitor. or a panasonic tough book they are expensive but they wont scratch as much. and no flex on the keyboards.
-
-
-
It depends, i think some people wont be so picky and could live with a scratch. $500 is steep though.
Im tempted to buying a new laptop tommorow, what do you guys think? Get one with onboard video (screw the x700) I dont play games anyways, screw tv tuner, etc.
I really should have just gone with an AcerNot sayin ASUS is bad, just that the more i spend on something the more paranoid i am with it.
But i dont know, maybe i should just keep it. Many of you say you would be able to live with a scratch but i dont believe most of you...easier said than done. -
Well if so, I honestly don't know if it came like that or I did it, Eddie. All I know is one day I happened to see it. It's not a big chip, more like a scratch about 1cm long. Not a very big deal.
-
The people here have tried repeatedly to help you, you need to start making decisions for yourself and being satisfied with those decisions. -
