at the moment I have an rather old HP Pavilion zv6000 laptop with Athlon 64 processor 3200+ running. I need to replace it because:

    1. it is very heavy although I rarely move my laptop
    2. the hinges had one repair
    3. hard drive is dying based on SMART data
    4. it can't play mkv 1080p videos

except playing mkv files, my HP processing power is still adequate for me. I'm a general laptop user, don't play any games. I browse the web, use office applications, listen and watch music/videos, run some trading platforms. However, I usually run a lot of these applications at the same time and I always use two monitors.
I will have Windows and Ubuntu (Linux) installed.

Now, I believe K42F will be a good choice for me. The first question is that since I always use two monitors (assume that one of them is playing a 720/1080p video) isn't it better to go for a dedicated graphics card instead of Embedded Intel GMA HD card. I could go for ASUS K42JK which has ATI HD 5145.

my other concern is that K42 series do not have dedicated microphone jacks. According ASUS site it is “1 x Headphone-out jack” and there is built-in microphone . I've read on Internet that it has a headset jack. Anyone has any experience to share?

Thanks for reading, comments will be highly appreciated.

    Hi,
In case you have bought your new laptop yet,
I have the Asus K42F and the headphone and Mic jack are combined in one. so you can use your mobile phone headphone/mic if you wanted to.
    hope this helps,.
