    Hi,

I'm one of those who like performance (and low price), and when I saw the G1's spec I was like wow that my future laptop !
BUT, maybe I'm a little too picky about it but I'm not fan of the design. The small light on the sides, the screw all around the screen, the green keyboard...
It's clearly a laptop for gamers, no doubt, and for the price the T7200/160Gb/2Gb/Go7700 it's amazing.

I'm a gamer, but a small gamer who likes performance.
But I also want to work with my new laptop, and imagine the G1 in a boardroom

So I'm looking for something equivalent, less flashy, I looked at the V1jp but cannot afford +200$

I saw the F3jp on newegg, it looks great, maybe I ll add 1more Gb of ram, but maybe there are some other great Asus laptop out there which can fit ?? Do you have any ideas ??

    Thx ! ;)

There's a few alternatives to the G1, besically all the other gaming laptos:
15.4" Alienware somethingoranother, it's more expensive and i wouldnt recomend it to anyone i didnt hate

and voodoo's got a 15.4 incher also, it's got 7600 and core 2 duo...voodoo is cool and all, but it's WAY expensive (like 3000 freaking bucks)

ROCK has a laptop that's also got a 7600, but i think it's the same one voodoo is using, it's cheaper, but still in the 2000's

thoes are the only laptops i no of that compete with the g1

the only other 15" gaming asus notebooks would be the built on models, i.e. s96j/z96j. at least in the states...

The Alienware Area 51 m5550 is an alternative.

Sorry guys and gals, but if Kou isn't a fan of the G1 gaming design..... Alienware, VooDoo, and the like are obviously out.

The F3jp is a nice little unit about the same quality as the G1 but not as flashy..... If you can't afford the V1, as said about there are custom models you can turn to..... that's about it though.

Thank you for the straight answer, you completely understood me, I think I'll go toward the F3jp
I also thought of Z96/S96j like you ejl but they seem less powerful than the F3jp.

One last question, are there any reseller selling the f3jp with 2Gb ram ? Milestone and proportable you don't seem to sell this laptop ??

And I'm Kuo not kou :p

I also considered this one, and that was a tough choice, 14.1" and 15.4". But I'll be coding on this notebook, and from what I read 15.4" is the minimum for developers
    thx for the post !

I would get the g1 anyway and reduce the toy additions.

the model it is based on is actually similar to the f3j, its actually older. The additions that make it look different are these lights on the side and carbon look finish

It could quite easily be modified to become an asus a6 if you follow.

It is in dollar value a much better deal than the f3jp

it has a better quality screen with a higher resolution you would appreciate at work.

    Thx for the reply.
    What did you mean by
I looked at the a6, ok it is not the most stylish notebook in the world but that the kind of design I'm looking for (classic)

thats what the g1 is it is the a6 with lights on the side.

what apears too different about the g1? It could easily be modified. I think the finish on the outside looks more business like personally

The lights even when off have a toy hue I would literally paint them or something.

the eye could be pried out.

I think before you discount the A8Js, maybe go to a store and play around with some different sized laptops.

15.4" is BIG. The #1 thing I hear people say when I ask them about their 15.4" (our school sells a lot of Thinkpad Z61m's at stupid high prices to poor uneducated frosh) is that it's big, heavy, and they wish they had gotten something smaller. They purchase them without seeing them first, so they have no idea what they are getting.

One of my classmates is comp-sci and he does just fine on a 13.3" Sony. I write a lot of MATLAB code on my 12" Z33.

Maybe you "heard" that 15.4" is a minimum for development work, but I would go to a store and look at some screen sizes and make a choice from there. I spent a lot of time looking at different models before I decided I wanted a regular ratio 12" (this was before there were a lot of 13.3" widescreens around) over a 12" widescreen.

Just my 2 cents on screen sizes and checking out things before you buy. I would *never* buy a laptop from a brick and morter store unless it happened to be an Asus dealer, but they are good for looking at a lot of different sizes and seeing what you want in that respect.

You could look at the HP nc8430 - not as good in terms of price/performance but I got mine (see sig) for $1670 a couple of months ago; it handles games quite decently, and it looks very classy in boardroom situations.

If not Id get something from another manufacturer

It's not hard or expensive to simply add a stick of 1gb...... We have some of the F3jp's, I just don't think they have them up on the site, I'll mention it to sales tomorrow.

I bought my G1 primarily for software development and some mild gaming. I've tried developing on my wife's 14.1 inch Toshiba and just found the screen too small to be useful. Having a higher resolution is a big boost to productivity since it allows you to see more lines of code at once. At the same time there is a case of diminishing returns when you get up to 17 inch because it becomes a lot less portable.

One thing I would warn you on is that some 15.4s seem far bigger than others. Case in point, I went to Best Buy the other day and compared a 15.4 inch Toshiba to a 15.4 inch Sony. The Toshiba seemed much bigger because of the stupid media controls on the side of the keyboard. The Sony actually seemed to be only slightly bigger than the 14.1 Toshibas.

I know its hard to really make this kind of comparison with an Asus that you'll be ordering online, but my point is that not every 15.4 inch is HUGE. It really depends on how well the manufacturer designs it.

One that you may consider is the MSI MS-16332. If you don't mind AMD processors. It's got a go7600GT 256 and comes in a 15.4 package. It also has lots more features for about the same price. Its got a fingerprint reader, express card AND PCMCIA both.
