I will definitely admit that you could chalk this up to me not knowing what I'm talking about, but here are the big issues I am having after installing windows 8 on my UX32VD

    • when the Nvidia Control Panel is set to "Auto-Select" the GPU icon is always green and the battery life reflects that the system is always running the GPU even when the GPU activity is listed as "None". The only way to fix this is have the system set to Integrated Graphics mode at all times.
    • Occasionally the system will stop accepting clicks except for the current browser window. Windows, other browsers, other software will not register clicks.
    • When connected to my desktop display through HDMI, the color is washed out. I turn on YcBcR mode in the Intel Graphics Properties module and it fixes it, but every time the laptop goes to sleep or is rebooted I have to turn this setting back on as it resets. I have tried making a profile for this with no luck, it ALWAYS resets.
    • The battery life is almost a full hour shorter than it was on Windows 7
    • There were other issues, like the processor only using one core for all processes, but this was fixed when I upgraded the BIOS patch from Asus' website.

I installed all the drivers from Asus's website except for the bloatware and utilities that I did not want, yet my Device manager has a lot of missing devices that I can't identify:

I installed an 8GB chip of Corsair Vengeance ram and now the machine is running 10GB of ram, and it is running a SandDisk Extreme 256 SSD that I installed.

I like Windows 8 a lot but I am about to revert to 7 because I can't solve these issues. I imagine it could be since I didn't install all appropriate drivers, or there are better driver editions that are not offered on Asus's website. It would be nice if someone who has done this can compile a ZIP or a list of drivers that need to be installed for them to get everything working without these issues. I don't think I left anything out. The biggest issue that I hate is that the battery life sucks compared to windows 7, only getting 4 hours maximum now.

    Hi,

Just a question that may not help you a lot but how did you manage to install win8 on the SSD ? Is it activated as well ? I have changed my HDD aswell for a SSD and want to put win8 on it (for the moment i have win7 on the iSSD but want my official win8 on the samsung SSD).

FYI I had bought a corsair 8gb RAM but it was 1333Mhz so i had to by another brand 1600Mhz. The default RAM is 1600 Mhz. I would advice you to check it as in my case it did have an impact on the performance especially in video mix software

I appreciate the response, it is a fully activated legal license of Windows 8, and yes I purchased and installed the correct 1600MHz RAM.

Edit: I installed it with Microsoft's USB windows installer tool and booted through a 16GB USB drive

Here is a list of things you can do to solve Windows 8 installation problems:

    • Upgrade to latest BIOS
    • Install latest NVIDIA drivers (from NVIDIA site e.g. Drivers - Download NVIDIA Drivers)
    • Install latest Intel drivers (chipset, HD graphics, wireless, dynamic platform and thermal framework, management engine interface). Again prefer to download directly from Intel website. Optional drivers from Intel are the Intel Rapid Storage drivers.
    • Install ELAN drivers (ELANTECH Drivers). These are better than the ASUS ones.
    • Install drivers for Realtek audio.
    • Install drivers for Realtek card reader.
    • Install drivers for ATKACPI, keyboard filter and Wireless Radio control, all from ASUS.
    • If you have installed on a SSD drive follow this guide for optimization : http://www.tweakhound.com/2012/11/14/windows-8-ssd-settings-etc/ . If you have 10 gb of memory, you can disable page file entirely.
    • Use Notebook Fan Control if you have issues with the fan being turned on and off continuously. [Vorstellung] NoteBook FanControl (NBFC) - ComputerBase Forum

If you still have unknown devices, open device manager and check hardware id. Google the id and you will find what the device is.
Regarding the use of GPU, make sure you have the latest drivers and restore default settings. Then note what program is using the GPU. If you want you can disable the GPU for this program.

That's all I can think of right now... I am running Windows 8 and everything is perfect, so you shouldn't have a problem if you follow the above steps. Good luck!

Where did you find the WIN8 pro iso ? How did you activate it ? Can you give me more details please ?

Thank you very much for your help.

I saw simul gave you lots of good insights ;)

I'm not sure what you're looking for here, I used a license that was given to me by my college through a company called JourneyEd software and I used their ISO and license. JourneyEd.com - Academic Software Discounts!

It's a totally normal copy just like you can buy at the store.

    Hi,

I understand why you don't understand what i meant :p. When i saw you precised you had put win8, i thought that your ux32vd had come with win8 but i guess it wasn't. When i bought mine i had win8 on the HDD. The thing is that when i put the SSD, i wanted to take advantage of the fact i already have a win8 licence. So i'm trying to find a way to use my licence but it seems it's not possible and i'll have to buy another one as Asus don't support when you change harddrive :(

Asus with win8 is different from win7. No more sticker. The key is directly in the bios. It's the new UEFI stuff. I guess i'll have to put the old disk back and find a way to take win8 from it :s.

I see. Well, before you try that, make sure the Windows 8 version you are trying to install is the same that was preinstalled. Also the disk should be GPT partitioned and you should boot in UEFI mode. Maybe then , Windows 8 will automatically recognize the key from BIOS.

that's pretty lame. That makes it a lot harder for the rest of us. I guess if you can find an ISO on the web then it will know in the BIOS that you have a license.

I have double checked and i do have a WIN8 PRO licence. I think it wasn't recognized by the BIOS cause it wasn't OEM. I mean it was one coming with a serial. I guess we should need a WIN8 PRO clean of any serial. Don't know if it exists. I called Asus yesterday so that they give me a direct link to reinstall my system. I told them my HDD was dead and i had to change it. They told me that they can't give me any windows 8 or even my serial because the hardware repair or change of the HDD has to come from them. It's so freaking . They encourage people to hack i can't take it another way !

Thanks for the tips everyone, I am pulling my hair out now because no software can find any missing devices, though something is CLEARLY wrong.

The CPU is burning at 71+ degrees Celsius and probably has been for a while, and nothing seems to have permission to engage the fan, speedfan, nor any other software. I am freaking out a bit to use it, though unfortunately it is completely impossible to stop as I'm in the middle of finals. I have no idea what to do but to either A) warranty the unit or B) put win 7 back on it and hope for the best.

I suggest using a tool such as ESET SysInspector http://www.eset.com/support/sysinspector/ and posting the report here.

It's actually OA 3.0 that has the embedded key. UEFI is just the firmware interface. And although Asus doesn't provide a sticker, some (or rather, very few) provide a COA sticker still. Unfortunately not many OEMs are offering the COA SLP anymore, as Microsoft is trying to crack down on pirating and hot loading via the OEM SLP. :(

Did you try the UnknownDevices utility I linked you to in my previous post?

It's not suppose to detect missing drivers; it's just suppose to tell you the manufacturer and (hopefully) the model of the device, so that you can locate a driver for it easier.

I suppose if it doesn't give you much to go off of, you can also give 3D chip a try.

Did you ever find a solution to your overheating problem? My UX32VD came with Windows 8 but is overheating. I have been wondering if a fresh install/downgrade to Windows 7 Ultimate might remedy the overheating.

I had the same problem and a solution was that I extracted all drivers for Win7 and for Win8 (both x64) from ASUS website to one folder (it is OK to leave them in their folders since Windows can search in sub directories) and via integrated Windows Device Manager I updated each missing hardware's driver from the folder. These missing drivers were for some Intel Thermal Management.

Now is everything OK. Hope it helps you!
