I've gotten my G73 for a few days and I'm so far very satisfied with what I've got. The only problem is that when I use it in the library, which has very bright lights, the glossy screen reflects a lot of light and the glare is hurting my eyes badly and I get strained easily.

Is there anything that you would recommend to eliminate the glare that would fit the screen of the G73? Any help would be appreciated!

How about you just don't bring your G73 to the library = problem solved.

A long time ago I have seen those gadgets out there for privacy, maybe that will work for you. Polarized glasses probably will prevent you from seeing things on the screen.
Oh and nice help guys with the how about you just don't bring it.
    get a life.

I'm just being a realist. None of the screen filters you can apply yourself will do the display justice. The only true solution to the problem would be to cough up some dough and buy another lcd panel that would cost several hundred dollars and install yourself. All the while there is no guarantee that it will be 100% compatibility.

I'd say just keep the notebook out of the library, otherwise expect to have a hole in your wallet and hours of your time wasted.

OP if you really want a matte screen..here's a point in the right direction.

As you can see the G73 screen dimensions are 15.5'x8.98" with a diagonal of 17.3 inches.

The best solution, if you really need the laptop at the library, is to buy an anti-glare privacy screen at a nominal cost. On the positive side, you won't have to worry about other people snooping on what you're doing.

    Here's a link:
    3M™ PF17.3W Notebook Privacy Filter
    Fits 17.3" Widescreen Notebook Computers

    Hope this helps!

Unfortunately, using my laptop in the library is a must to me, so, thank you alexenoxu and mylowrider, you are being very helpful.

When I'm in the library I only do paperwork so a screen with less contrast wouldn't be too much of a problem to me.

Would these privacy filters help in reducing glare? :)

Yes, they're not glossy and reflective, and so won't reflect everything back at your eyes. I have such a filter myself, and it's perfect.

Before spending some 20-50$ on a filter/film/shield you have to know that the quality of the image will be reduced for as long as you keep it attached to the screen. But it might definitely help reducing the reflections.
I tried one a few weeks ago and wasn't satisfied. Had to remove it because of the image quality drop.
There's no golden solution IMO, unless you buy it with a built-in anti-glare screen (eg. Lenovo W510).

It's frustrating that 98% of all modern laptops ship with "super shiney glare" screens, its absolutely ludicrous.
For a small perceived bump in contrast you are forced to stare at your mirror image while trying to do work on what is clearly designed as a portable computing device where lighting is almost never ideal.

I completely agree that poor quality filters will reduce the quality of the image -- hence, that's why I recommended the $100+ 3M filters. Expensive, but worth it.

BTW, that's why I use my thinkpad for serious work. :)

Yes, that's frustrating. I'd sacrifice 30% of my RGB LED abilities to have that matte finish. I can't work on it and have to go back to my 8 yr old ThinkPad that has a perfect anti-glare screen.
My next purchase will have a nice matte screen for sure.

Have you tried them? I assume that for different systems they'd have to make custom filters. For instance, my M17X has an RGB LED with a very thick plastic cover that creates extra reflections. I think its thickness will have an additional impact on the screen quality when the filter is applied.

I'm wondering if anyone of you get eye-strains after extended periods with glossy screens, other than get annoyed by reflections? In bright light condition my eyes get strained in an hour or so while when I'm watching DVDs on a glossy screen with lights half off I'm good for a few hours...

I do get it, very often. That's why, screw them all, just ordered a Lenovo W510 with a nice anti-glare LED screen. Wanna indulge my eyes, not to kill em.

My acers mirror screen gets the job done at ruining my sight for the rest of the day if I work longer than 1 hour on it.

My next laptop will have a matte screen, I don't even care about good hardware anymore, I just need to be able to see what i'm doing!

I am almost always sitting in a dim lit room. I try to have my rooms situated with no windows beind me, same for the TV for that matter. Granted my G73 is for home use, and almost always means playing games or surfing while watching TV. Even at work though I don't see the lights above me causing any problems from that angle.

Hehe, what's the point of having laptop that has to be glued to one place. Might as well buy a desktop.

Not sure who you were referring to but if it was me I do move mine around all the time, just don't ever sit in an office environment with it. At friends or family's houses as I said I always find a dark spot, or turn off the lights or even pull the shades if it is broad daylight. Even without the glare a highly lit room kills my eyes as the screen is harder to see (guess it's the lack of contrast). I have always done this with LCD TV's and have had good results.

I agree mostly about getting a desktop unless you plan to move it around, except I always have my family get laptops even though they never move them. The reason I do this is because I am the one who has to fix it and it’s much easier to grab the laptop and take it home with me.

I just got the W510 ordered, with a eCoupon it's now slashed to 1200-1300$ including shipping and taxes. The specs are in my sig.
In 2 days from now they will be back at 2k, so if you're interested -> rush.
In addition the system has 2 USB 3.0 ports and 4 DDR3 slots, 1GB FX880M GPU (will run most of the current games at med+) and the best of all a nice anti-glare LED screen.

Kind of weird they offer a laptop for 1.3k and will make the price 2k again after a few days, which makes it seem that the hardware they are selling is just overpriced and not worth it.

Anyway, my next laptop will most likely be the new vostro 3300, or another 13 inch laptop with a matte screen for a pricetag of +-700€. I payed +1K for a laptop once (this acer = 1300€) and it was the last time. New hardware is overpriced, and useless to me since I need a portbale lappy for school which I need to use everywhere, which includes bright places.

But its nice to know that there are laptops with matte screens that are capable of playing the newest games (like the lenovo you mentioned), since i'll probably change my mind another 100 times in the future, your suggestion will most likely come in handy.

I don't think the hardware is overpriced , but rather a mistake on the website, as the same speced system from older and less powerful line doesn't drop to that price. I double-checked and discount is valid only for the older models... it seems they didn't intend to lower the prices for the W510 model, looks like a mistake done by the webmasters. If they don't process my order, will continue camping. ;)

    >>> The 13.3' vostro doesn't have a LED so with a lower brightness you still might struggle outdoors even if it's an anti-glare. So be careful. But it looks very attractive to me.

If the anti glare led screens have the same small viewing angles as the 'normal' mirror led screens which i've seen at the stores, I am glad the vostro doesn't use led.

Sigh... Why is it so hard to get a laptop good for both gaming and productivity? Now I have to resort to the crappy Pentium 4 desktops at the library for work....

Do let us know if the Lenovo or Vostro have good screens though, thanks! :)
