Can anyone recommend a good anti-virus software package, other than Norton/McAfee?

Whenever I try to turn my V6Va off, ccapp.exe (used by Norton) refuses to shut down, and the computer becomes unresponsive, i.e., I have to kill it via the power switch. I hate having to do this and I'm just all around sick of Norton Internet Security.

I used to have the ccapp problem on my desktop too, but I uninstalled Norton Internet Security on it (mid subscription too) and installed the Norton version that my university was providing at the time - better, but still makes the computer too slow.

How ironic is that? You install anti-virus software to protect your computer from viruses, but the software itself makes your computer slower?

    Ah...I'm ranting now.

Oh, on a side note: does anyone know how to access the list of programs that Windows will automatically load when you boot up (preferably without using the registry)?

The first thing i did when i got my V6J was to remove norton crapware & install F-Secure Client Security :)

To access program startup list, open run and type in msconfig and have a look at the startup tab

Trend Micro PC-cillin might work for you too. I know it's blown Norton out of the water (but I'm beginning to think just about any program can..lol...)

Used PC-cillin for 4 years and swore by it... Used Esafe for a couple years before that (also great and a nice firewall)....... I've used Kaspersky for the last year and know what it's done for our not only my own systems but also our mail and web servers.... Catch viruses by the people who make them.... the Russians.

Asus used to give out the best version of PC-cillin there was... version 2002..... the problem was people thought it was outdated and just "free crap software"... but really it was the last version that wasn't bogged down to compete with the UI of Norton...... It only used like 5mb of system resources and was updated almost daily.

With that said - Asus started giving out Norton 2005 - so at least people would use it..... but it's the first thing to come off all of my systems and eventhough we give it out, I suggest if you know what you're doing and want something better - don't use norton.

I concur. It's a good program... I use Avast too. It's very effective, but it does use up a little more RAM than I'd like it to...

I recommend you Kaspersky, which is maed in Russia.
    It is the #1 ranked.
If you want something faster than F-Secure is good too.

NOD 32 is by far the best our there. I have tested lots of different software and this comes top.

Its does exactly what you want it to do without draining your processor. Download a trial version if you want to give it a go!

EDIT: forgot to add that it gets updated very single day!! very impressed just by this.

I switched from Norton (which I had used for about 4years) to AVG free about 6 months ago. So far my experiance has been really great. No virus infections, and my computers are sooooo much faster. They boot in about 1/3 of the time now too....it updates daily and did I mention its FREE.
So glad to be rid of norton, will never go back
