Some of the application vendors are predicting a need for >4GB RAM in the next 2-4 years. If I buy a new computer, would like it to last that long. Maybe get 1 GB RAM now and add new memory in 2 years or so, as memory prices drop.

Anyone know of any Asus model that is capable of taking 8 GB RAM in the future? Thanks.

I know any 64bit OS supports up to 16 (I think) gigs of ram but at this point it's really anyone's guess whether any of today's laptops will support 8gigs of ram.

As mentioned, 4gb RAM sticks aren't even in production, perhaps in it's engineering sampling stage.

But to be honest, by the time we require 8gb of RAM, I'm sure you'll have updated your notebook at least twice.

kwoodard, I am only aware of one model which might suit your needs but it's an IBM.

Most laptops are just getting around to supporting 4GB of RAM, and the OSes are finally starting to actually take advantage of that just now. I'd say 8GB is a little too costly for its benefits.

Whoo boy, I don't think you should be worrying about 8 gigs of ram for a while. :)
As Cori said, you'll VERY much likely be on another computer or most likely two or more before you need 8 gigs.

I did read the datasheet for the 945PM (the chipset for W3J) and the PM965 (the chipset for the new Santa Rosa platform). The maximum memory for both of them is 4GB so non of the current laptops support 4GB and seriously, I don't think any laptop user programs will need or be able to use that much of RAM.

Besides, by the time they start using 4GB sticks it's probably not DDR2 anymore. Since they say they're skipping DDR3, it's probably DDR4.

The DDR4 has not even been planned yet.I think you are confusing it with the GDD4 which is currently being used for GPUs and GDDR4 is totally irrelevent to DDR3.I have never heard of a CPU which uses the G-DDR kind of memory except the Xenon (XBOX360 CPU which shares the memory with the GPU)
The DDR3 is planned to be used with the upcoming intel Montevina platform.

DDR3 is not being skipped - desktop boards with it should be out by the end of the year.

I have 2GB in my X2 desktop, 1GB in my AthlonXP desktop, and 1GB in my Z33, and all of those seem quite happy. I haven't upgraded to Vista yet.

In all honesty, the only times I have ever used all 2GB in XP has been when playing Battlefield 2, and when doing CAD/CAE and computational fluid dynamics at the same time on both cores. In other words, very very rarely. With Vista, maybe a bit more often.
