Is anyone can tell / any idea is Asus W7S 1.5 GB RAM is running in dual Channel? Since it only comes with 1 RAM slot so probably it running in single channel but some thread from other forum posted that the 1GB ram is running in dual channel??? How???(If single channel then performance is reduce in almost half and wasted the 2.0 GB Santa Rosa).

It cant since the onboard memory is 512mb and soldered on, but Dual Channel is overrated.
-
from what i hear, its greatest benefit is for integrated gpus and running 3d apps....but since you have the 8400gs, you don't need to really worry about it.
-
If it is not running in dual channel then this model is wasted.. Why it soldered 512mb on board? sounds funny. Somemore with on board 667Mhz, you can't upgrade to 800mhz ram in the future and mean the advantage of a faster FSB of Santa Rosa will be lost since Santa Rosa processor with 800FSB...
Why you said overrated? For ram running dual channel module, I found some sites can prove that it performance run much better than single channel. -
For desktops yes, but not for notebooks. The Santa Rosa platform, even if its FSB is 800mhz, can't even use 800mhz RAM even if it comes out, it'll only downclock it to 677mhz.

Yes, it does run in dual channel (asymmetric mode). Basically, the first 512 mb of the 1gb channel is dual channel, while the second 512mb is single.
Technically, its complicated to explain. Here is a file that explains it - http://download.intel.com/design/chipsets/applnots/30167003.pdf -
You get Dual Channel for the first 512MB of each stick (1GB) and single channel for the extra 512MB on the new stick.
It's a feature called 'Asymmetric Dual Channel' that Intel added one or two chipsets ago. -
If what you said is true, then it make sense they build in 1 RAM slot... -
just to be clear, i meant that dual channel seems to only significantly affect integrated gpu performance. i will try to find where i found the information.

Wow.. it's great thanks to everyone.. fast response.
Then I would be happy to try it out this laptop coz my main concern is RAM... so the only problem left is heat problem.. I have an eyes and felt the laptop at shop there.. it is very very hot...even I compared with a few laptops included W5Fe... Hope the laptop cooler helps..
Thanks guys... -
Yes, it does offer an increase in performance for integrated graphics cards. Thats because they offer more bandwidth. Normal 667 MHz RAM would not be enough, because it can't feed both the requirements of the integrated graphics card, and the processor. Dual channel can help by upping the RAM bandwidth, thereby allowing enough data flow for the inegrated graphics card and processor.

here's some information with some benchmarks on ram bandwidth. the increase is very negligible. -

I am pretty sure that, like others have said, at least on notebooks the increase in performance due to dual channel over the single channel configuration is nearly zero. Certainly not something that you can feel when using the notebook in real-life.
So you can stop worrying about it. -
E.B.E. is correct. Assuming you are using an 800 MHz FSB and 667 MHz RAM, then the only time you may feel any difference is when you are completing a task, which requires a lot of processor data throughput and is memory intensive. Not many tasks do both of that, but some do. Generally, however, most users don't do such tasks, as using asymmetric dual channel, the problem desn't really occur.

which laptop cooler do you guys recommend? W7S is pretty warm
-
Is there any reason why you can't put a single 2GB stick into the single slot on the W7S?
-
There isn't. You buy the stick, insert it, and voila, you now have 2.5GB memory
-
Now to find a screwdriver small enough for these tiny screws...
Any idea is Asus W7S 1.5 GB RAM running in dual Channel?
