I've read some reviews for the 1.83GHz V6J but the one I can find in stock is only 1.66GHz, is it a lot slower than 1.83?

I think you'll be hard pressed to find a big difference (or any difference)...any US buyer will have the 1.66GHz proc.

It would cost something like $50-100 more to put the 1.83 GHz chip in there while giving a very very small boost in performance. Business-wise, Asus found that they would sell more in the U.S. market by using the 1.66 GHz chip.

In a thin chasis like the V6J, the additional heat output from the 1.8ghz core duo might have been a little closer to the asus thermal heat threshold?

something to consider. remember its running a dedicated video card as well.

I think it is purely marketing considerations. All V6Js here in the Netherlands have T2400s in.

I have the 1.66 GHz in the V6j, I am working on a review for it now, but my Super Pi time for 2M was 1:31, seems to fall in line with what people have been getting. That was also with other stuff running. The computer runs fast, unlesss you have some serious multi-threaded programs, you won't notice a difference.

    Asus V6J T2400 (1.83 GHz) Super PI 2M digits: 1m21s

(also with all the "normal" amount of background applications, and while playing Winamp :) )

So, 1.83 _does_ make a difference (in this case, based only on one run, of 8%). Not noticeable if you don't run CPU intensive applications on a regular basis. Noticeable if you do.
