I know the V1s appeared on cnet, computex and the Asus support site but I thought it was supposed to have been officially announced by now? whats up?. Anyone seen it for sale yet?
-
-
seriously! i need it to be shipped to me before august 16. its when i leave for college.
-
nah still havent heard anything, i thought you bit the bullet and order a 1520?
-
Im returning it, The grainy screen was the final straw.
-
was it the wsxga screens that were the only ones that were grainy?
have ya thought about getting the mbp again at all, thats where it feels like im going to end up. -
I got the WXGA+ screen. I have thought of the MBP, The lack of a true right click and the 1 year warranty are about the only things holding me back, the V1S has a better GPU (More Vram) and I like the look of it.

i dont want to try and convince you or anything but have you used the trackpad with the 2 finger right click? before i tried it i bagged it but then when i went and tried one i actually preferred it, i found it easier than reaching toward the other side of the trackpad with my thumb.
im sure this is just my attempt at convincing myself to just get one. -
the double right click is one of the worst ideas ever, imo. i want to punch a wall everytime i have to right click on a mac.
-
I tried on my sisters and a friends, I really didnt like it. And I dont understand why the mac only comes with one year warranty when most other high end laptops come with 2 years. And Ive heard the MBP batteries fail pretty quickly.
-
).
-
uhh......i'll worry about that when my right track button breaks...and i'll buy a lottery ticket on that day too, cause the chances of that happening are pretty damn slim.
plus i use a mouse -
The odds of my right click button going are about the same as the single click button on the mac going, Actually its about half
as you use the single click button twice as much on a mac because you dont have a right click
.

In my organinization we have about 2000 laptops ranging in age from new - 3-4 years old. Which we replace usually at the 4th Year. I have never in my 10 years as a SA ever had to replace a touchpad becasue the "right-click" broke. So scrap that idea

Matt_h1 what's your budget mate? You could try getting a Zepto laptop in case you can't get the V1S.
-
To the guy who needs a laptop in his hands by August 16, I wouldn't hold my breath. A good buffer for the time you *need* a laptop and the time to buy is ~1 month. If the V1S was officially paper released this week, it'd still take time for it to get built, and then sent to the retailers here, and then for them to customize it to your specs, and then to ship it to you, and then you want a buffer in case something is DOA. And then some time to customize/reinstall/get used to it.
It's a good time to look at alternatives just in case. You don't want to wait until the last minute, when your options will be limited. -
Hrm, well, I guess if you don't like the double tap method or the 2-finger click method, then you don't like it. There's always an external mouse..
As for the warranty, there are ways to double it with certain credit cards. Sell the free iPod nano and printer you get and you just paid for the applecare and then some...
EDIT: oops, sorry for double-posting. -
The zepto laptops are large and a lil ugly TBH, And there battery life is horrid.
-
damn i sick of waiting for this laptop to come out, think im just going to get the MBP. Bloody asus, the only other laptop that i think could kind of fit aesthetics and weight wise might be the fz although 1280x800 on a 15.4" is biggg, why doesnt sony make any decently spec'd 15.4" machines.
-
Sheldon77, I did that originally, I went with their last gen 15.4" FE series, A month after I bought it they released them with the 7600 instead of the 7400 and knocked $200 off to boot. Depends how urgently you need it I suppose.
-
i have finally decided on the MBP, to me theres no real cons of it, there is but they arent that big a deal to me, and i guess at the end of the day its the notebook i want most. hope you have better luck than you have been getting so far with your notebook purchases. also i saw in another post that you know somewhere where they laser etch MBPs, where abouts in australia are you?
-
Im in Sydney, God that post was ages ago, Are you stalking me?
. The place that does the etching is in Artarmon. Theres four cons as far as im concerned with the MBP, This yellow tint problem, The 1 year warranty and almost $500 to upgrade it, The poor battery cycle life (Meaning the number of charges you get before the battery becomes unuseable), And the lack of a true right click key.
-
-
3 year warranty - it's actually only $200-300 isn't it? Anyway, as mentioned, select CC allow you to double it to 2 years for free.
Poor battery life cycle - eh, i thought this was largely fixed by this generation of MBP? In any event, you could just get it replaced under the above warranty plan right? - on the other hand, the 5-hour battery time under OSX sure is nice.
Right click key - not only that, but currently, there's no software support for the touchpad under Vista at all. That means you can't turn it off, and you can't set up an "accidental touch" feature that's in OSX. If you touch it by accident while you're typing, it will move. This is definitely a fixable problem in the future though.
I still suggest just getting a mouse
I assume you're not a student or have no way of getting a student to hook you up with the $500 discount. Oh well.
I would be in the same boat you're in now with the V1S if I didn't pick up a MBP. Even now, as August approaches, there still is not a single laptop that fits my requirements out yet other than possibly the V1S, which isn't really out (and the MBP of course). -
Taelraek, As has been made obvious several times, Sheldon and I are from Australia. It is $579 for the 3 year warranty extension here, If they are charging that much clearly they dont have much faith in their product when everyone else is asking half that price. The battery only comes with a 6 month warranty I think, So thats not much use. The point of a laptop is to be mobile, I use mine on the train, in lectures and during long travel, A external mouse really isnt practical in those situations. I am a student, Here the MBP is $2600 for Students or $2900 for normal buyers for the Low end model.
The confirmed specs from the Asus July Catalog for the V1S:

The expected release date is July 28th, Apparently there are some supply issues and it may not hit stores until mid August.
This information has been posted on the Forums numerous times, And this is the fourth time ive told you I'm Australian Taelrak >.< -
Oh and Sheldon if you do go with the MBP, Id wait a week for the new chargers to hit the stores, They're alot smaller, Good things come to those who wait
http://www.engadget.com/2007/07/20/apples-macbookpro-85w-magsafe-adapter-finally-shrunk/ -
In that case, you need to move to a country where laptops are cheaper
EDIT: funny thing is, when I went to give you rep in the other thread, I just noticed it actually says "Australia' right under your avatar...ah well, so much for being blind. -
matt h1 with pricing have you looked into salary sacrificing your notebook, you can potentially save a lot of money.
and thanks for the information about the charger, if i do go MBP i would order from their online store, so when do i have to order it to get the smaller charger because your link didnt have a specific date? -
Im a student : / I have no salary to sacrafice unfortunately. I was working as a casual doing admin work but I got made redundent
-
It looks like the smaller chargers are already in the Apple Store online - from the picture anyway. Ah well, time to shell out another $80...couldn't they have brought these out a month earlier with the MBP release? yeesh
-
it does look like the new ones are on the australian website as well. nice means i dont have to wait even longer....
anyway im also a student but im going to get my parents to salary sacrifice it for me, so that means student discount + salary sacrifice = not a bad price.
Any sign of the V1s yet?
