My mom decided after playing around with my Z70V she now wants a notebook. Nothing major, just something so she can surf the web anyhere in the house. I was like, "oh, there's some fairly inexpensive Asus lappies, how much is your max?" "$600". "Oh...".

Just perusing the models on Geared2Play I can't configure anything below the 900s . Are there any real entry level models out there I'm missing? I can get a pretty basic machine from Dell for $600, but I'd really rather not. I might convince her to go up to $800 but anymore for a web browsing machine and I'd feel a bit guilty.

Not really, but the z91n can come close.

Old chipset though, has a built in camera and is a Centrino. Found one for $899 CDN, so thats around 750~ USD I think?

There's going to be a refresh of that model, Z91E. The chasis looks a lot better in the update in my opinion, i think it has the new chipset, not sure on ETA though.

The refresh is already out z91e. Unforturnately we dont sell celerons or 256mb ram so entry price is still at 1000$ or so

Hmm... could always buy a barebook and add the stuff myself I guess. Don't think I could do much better than $800 though.

Well yeah, you can just get the latest Barebone of Z91 from Geared2Play.com, it's still listed as $599 i beleive. Not bad with a built in camera. Especially if you've got a crappy Dell lying around that you can part out, like I have.

I can get you the barebone Z91E for $600. You can than add a Celeron-M, 256MB RAM, WiFi, and hard drive for around $800. IMO this system would be much better than any Dell you can buy for the price.

Another alternative would be to purchase the ASUS A6U whitebook along with a AMD Mobile Sempron processor. The whitebook includes the optical combo drive and wireless card. All you have to buy is the hard drive, CPU, and memory. The total would be around $750.

You can later upgrade the CPU to an AMD Turion. Check out pictures here: http://store.agearnotebooks.com/asusa6uphotos.html. It's a sweet looking system with a 15.4" widescreen.

    Very nice idea corbanpc.

The Sempron does somewhat perform better then the Celery :D

And the a6u is quite a looker as well.

The A6u is cheap, but it's a turion system and to use a turion cpu would be expensive...... you can use an a64 in it and bring the cost way down.
