I've pretty much narrowed my search down to these two. There are some significant differences like widescreen and 855 vs 915. I have a DTR Sony VAIO now (3 years old, ~45lbs, 17 inch) that will serve as my "home" computer so I need something relatively lightweight yet still functional for business school (no 10 inch screens). Does the 855 chipset make a big difference against the newer 915? They are both attractive and in the same price range. I'm impressed with both, which makes the choice that much harder. If anyone has interacted with both, your advice would be much appreciated.
    Thanks!

Boy, the Portable One MX looks suspiciously like the Asus M3Np [ :D](http://www.ynot2k.com/products/laptops/m3n/m3n.htm), which will be refreshed as the Z61A very soon here, and will have the 915 chipset.

Anyway, I am starting my MBA this fall and am looking for a notebook, so good luck! FYI: the W3 will have a barebones model coming out as the Z63A, which will save you some $$$ if you can live with integrated graphics and WXGA. I am currently debating between this (Z63A) and the M3 refresh (Z70A, now released). Both are Sonoma, DDR2, WXGA, and should save you a lot of $$$, which, if you’re anything like me, you’ll be very, very poor for the next 2 years.

yes, thats an M3...... the W3 and the M3 although they really share some lineage.... the M3 shouldn't be in the same room as the W3. Just look at the specs, that about all you need to know.

quickly..... besides the screen, bluetooth, dedicated graphics, 8x dvd-dual layer drive..... they weigh about the same, get about the same life...... but the W3 takes the M3 in looks and function by a long shot.

Lets put it this way... the M3 is a great system, it was THE original prototype system that Asus developed for Intel as THE "reference design" centrino notebook almost 2 years ago to the day. It's had a great life, and will be refreshed again to continue on...... but the W3 is light years ahead.

With that said.. if you don't need all the goodies in the W3, the M3 should be coming in pretty cheap.

    Thanks,
    Justin

Thanks guys, these model numbers and all get so confusing. Some of the details of what I need, I still need to finalize. I.e., I think I'll need an s-video out (or something that will hook into a projector) for presentations or to a TV.

Greg: Where you going to school? I've outsourced my education to China (www.ceibs.edu) and so I won't be plopping down the $120k for a US school but it still isn't cheap...

I don’t think you’ll need an S-Video for presentations. Typically just the external monitor plug is used, which almost all have (anybody – correct me if I’m wrong).

Anyway, I’m going to BYU. The ranking vs. price is unbelievable. I’ve decided to go the more traditional route and do the full-time on-campus thing. However, CEIBS beat BYU in the international MBA rankings (22 vs 49). It looks like you’ll be set up pretty nicely when finished!

s-video is another option for exporting video for sure... but traditionally you'd use a projector and for that you'd want to use the RGB out which you'll find on EVERY asus laptop built in the last 5 years.

    Thanks,
