I was wondering if anybody around here does (or would do) the backlit keyboard mod for payment? I'm shockingly incompetent with such things, and I'm sure there are others like me who would be willing to pay somebody else to do this for them. I'm in the Raleigh-Durham, NC area.

Yup, count me in too, however.....
Keep in mind that nobody here will be held liable for any damage to your laptop. -
There was a user who made a mod on his N71Jq... Turned out so sexy!

Interested in this one too!

I did it to my G73 and it is the easiest thing in the world. I had never even opened up a laptop in my life as well. I think you could do it if you really wanted.

What exactly voids the warranty now? Soldering is a no-no, but is the tape route okay?
-
I understand mostly everything just not the soldering to the usb or motherboard.
Also, how bad will the battery get decreased? maybe 1000 mW per hour? (for just the lights) -
There is a pretty big and informative thread on this matter

It's not terribly difficult if you know how to solder. Wire glue works too but I don't how it holds up for the long term.
If you're afraid to do it yourself, I can do it for you for nominal charge as long as you're willing to ship it to boston. I've done it to a UL50, UL30, as well as an acer 4820.
The lights will use around 1-1.5 watts, so the battery life won't be that bad. I installed switches on mine, so I can turn it off to save bat during the day. -
Here is the thread which shows the details of backlight keyboard that I implemented on my N71JQ.
