Apparently, most of our notebooks have a ticking bomb inside them, thanks to Nvidia's faulty engineering of the G84 and G86 chips.
I myself have had the system completely shut down out of nowhere during gaming, even though my temps are normal.
How do you think Asus will handle this?

Is the 8600m GT in Vostro 1500 G86?
Hopefully they replace somthing here.. -
8600m GT is a G84. Still no "Official" word from nVidia as to what is at fault. Could be nothing more rumours. Could also be bad though.
-
seeing as how the 9500m is basically the same card as the 8600m is it also affected?

It's not just notebooks ... desktops with NVIDIA cards are impacted as well.
Basically, there's a better-than-average chance that a HUGE number of NVIDIA products will crash and burn. Let's hope NVIDIA issues a press release soon explaining exactly what they're going to do to fix the situation.
I haven't had any problems with my desktop NVIDIA card or my notebook NVIDIA card, but both are on the list of graphics that have faulty chips.
On the bright side I guess this is more good news for ATI. Between the new ATI notebook IGP and the new ATI desktop cards it looks like ATI has a chance to regain some market share. It just sucks for you, me, and everyone else currently using NVIDIA graphics. -
Could NBR post this upcoming press release (whenever it is) as a news item, so everyone gets a chance to see it?

Just noticed isnt the 9500m GS in many systems as of late a die shrink of the 8600m GT ... would they be affected aswell? -
i'll just be monitoring my temps a little more carefully
thank god asus has a good 2 year warranty service in canada -
Here in the UK I'm certainly sweating. If my laptop has got to go back to Anovo for repair then it will take them a month to repair it and will come back damaged. Probably with another 8600M in it also!

Is there a good program other than everest used to monitor temps?
-

Heh, it's funny how they're saying that. ATI used to always overspec their equipment and it would crash and burn. I think it's good that nVidia is actually stepping up to the plate here, but at the same time it's probably going to be one of those "we aren't replacing it until it's broke" sorts of things.
The laptop pieces have to withstand more abuse than their desktop counterparts due to the fact that it's usually a more compact cooling system with less airflow.
Anyone else sweating and farting over Nvidia's screwup?
