Hi all,
It's fairly well-known that ASUS uses RG/BW Pentile displays in just about all of their 15.6" laptops they advertise as having 3840x2160 resolution. These displays can only reproduce about every other pixel's worth of detail, and if you do the math then you'll find that the effective pixel density is actually lower than that of 3K 2880x1620 resolution displays, which don't even require the computer to work as hard to render the picture.
The Panasonic VVX16T028J00, the 3K 2880x1620 display used in a number of laptops including the Thinkpad T-Series and MSI Ghost Pro 3K, uses the same connector as the Samsung and LG false-4K displays, confirmed by user arcticjoe in an albeit unsuccessful attempt at swapping the display into the Lenovo Y50.
I am quite interested in learning if this swap is possible. If there is any interest in attempting this, I am willing to purchase the 2880x1620 LCD and lend it out to anyone in the area who would like to attempt the swap. I will also give you the option to buy the screen from me for the price I paid for it (I expect it to be around $125), but you won't at all be required to. Either post here or contact me via PM if you're interested.
Laptops with pseudo-4K displays this applies to:
- ASUS UX501 advertising 4K UHD 3840x2160 resolution
- ASUS UX510 advertising 4K UHD 3840x2160 resolution
- ASUS N552VW advertising 4K UHD 3840x2160 resolution (not confirmed but most likely)
- ASUS GL552VW advertising 4K UHD 3840x2160 resolution
- ASUS Q534UX advertising 4K UHD 3840x2160 resolution (edit: added this)
EDIT: Does not include submodels out of the above with a touchscreen glass layer glued to the entire LCD face. Unsure which touch models are like that.
Anyone near NCSU want to try replacing their ASUS Pentile-4K screen with a true-3K 2880x1620 screen?
