Everyone that owns a G50VT-X5, can you please run 3dmark06 and list your score here, with default settings (as in no OCing)? I've googled search for like an hour and maybe found 1 3dmark06 score..... so everyone that owns this laptop, I'd appreciate it if you post a score. Thanks!

Or if you own a G50V-X5, can you also post. That way we can compare the scores :) Make sure you list which laptop you have been posting a score.

You can find the general benches on notebookcheck for the 9800 GS. Keep in mind some people here have a GTS bios flashed which raises the voltage and clock speeds and that gets in the 9,000 area.

While processor will affect the score you can pretty much pull the score from any stock G50VT and be not far from.

Im benching the hell out of myne when i get it in a couple of weeks. and G50V-X5, not heard of such a model but had it existed it owuld have a lower score.

You can play crysis at your native res with decent settings, need anything else lol

the X5 at Best Buy is by FAR the highest 3dmark score you will get for that price. To get higher, you have to spend $1150 on the Gateway (you may get a few more points out of the $1100 MSI GT627 216US, but not by much).

The NewEgg model comes with a 9700M GT GPU, which isn't bad just not as good as a 9800M GS.
    But the rest looks good.
I would get the X-5 from BB and then if you think you need a faster CPU you can upgrade it + it's really a great deal, probably the best price to performance ratio available anywhere.
The only thing going against it are the questionable graphics on the lid (c'mon lightning bolts????)
If you can get over that, then you are good to go.

Nice find but ur sorta wrong, The ram is actually WORSE and the HDD is the same (or worse depending on which psec u read lol).

Slower ram versus the 100mhz upgrade cpu..... i dunno about that.

It is prettier but i dont see a real upgrade here if it only had bluetooth or something to sweeten the deal.

Ick, bad Best Buy specs still causing confusion. Everything is the same about the X1 and X5 except for the color/lid, the battery (better in X5) and the CPU (better in X1). Those are the ONLY changes. Not anyone's fault but best buy's, but I've been researching them for a while and try to clear up confusion.

Well hell if the ram (which is stated on both sides as the slower) is the same speed. I might just pick this up if its still on sale in 2 weeks.... i sorta doubt it though. The X5's price is solid but i dont thinkt he X1 will stay that price though 9 Cell versus 100Mhz it ought to lol.

X1 looks better but for the 9 Cell i can sorta live with it. The p8400 would negate my wish to upgrade the cpu to the 8600 next year.

with cpu overclocked by direct console to 2.3 and stock gs speeds on gpu I get low 9000s like 9100-9200..with gpu set to gts speeds I get around 9700-9900.

Anyone using xp on this laptop? With all that ram is it a good idea to switch?

Are you sure the RAM is the same between them? Its labeled at 5300 on both the overview and the spec tab. If it really is the same, I'd rather get the X1!

Well I don't see how the OS makes a difference between the slightness in hardware between the two laptops. I've used XP, XP 64, vista 64 and windows7. I'll NEVER EVER GO BACK to XP 64. Almost no drivers for it, and its horrible. You're way better off with vista 64, even if it is alittle slower.

I'm still trying to figure out if the ram is really the same between the two. I don't see why bestbuy would list it as a 5300 on the x1, if it was infact 6400, like the x5 has.

Ram isnt part of the motherboard and the motherboard supports the very common 667mhz ram. So its not like it would have been odd or difficult for it to have it.

It is apparently specified wrong on their site, other then that nothing special.

Went on my weekly trip to BB today and was screwing around with the X5, overall it was nice but the buttons on the touchpad felt weird, almost a little loose, I don't know if it was just the floor model that was just being abused but is there any reports about the touchpad/controls having problems? ( I don't know but it felt cheap and flimsy).
Also looked at the lid for a little while( still can't get used to it.UGGH!) but it sort of looked and felt like the graphics on the lid was sort of stuck on.Can anyone confirm if the laptop cover is painted on or has some sort of sticker than can be peeled off.( The stupid lightning bolts.ZZZZZZZAAP!)
And just to let everyone know the BB dudes were pretty much useless when I asked a few questions about this laptop.I knew more about it!

Heh i hate it when people call everyone who works at best buy an idiot, because what if one of us lost our job and ended up there to pay some bills.

But at the same time they dont want to pay for people worth their weight so thats how it ends up. I had an actual question one time had a stack of boxes in my hand. Girl walked up and shes like can i help you and i was like no. My actual thought was if I have to ask you dont have the answer.

13 to 15 days left for me!

I never had any issues with the touchpad with my G50. The touchpad itself was very easy to use due to the smooth matte surface and your fingers can glide across easily. The buttons were very shallow, tight and makes a very distinctive audible click when pressed.

The cover design isn't painted nor stickered on. It's part of Asus' "infusion" technology which makes the design bind directly in the chassis itself.

Unfortunately, that's how it is in every major electronics retail store and I wouldn't be surprised if my 10 year old cousin is more knowledgeable than they are.

I meant If they have diff mobos that support diff types of ram eg ddr, ddr2, ddr3 400 667 800 ect..
I know the ram isnt part of the motherboard i hate when people assume others dont know anything about parts..I've had my share of laptops and rigs I've built for myself and others...Like I said though, Vista is not working for me lol I tried to load up my xp cd today and after uploading all the files before choosing a partition...Blue screen pops up...I've never loaded xp to replace a vista partition before..Any idea why the blue screen pops up? It's so frustrating I'd really appreciate any info

Didn't mean any disrespect but it's true, maybe it's just my local BB but every time I have a question about a certain laptop they just look at me funny.
Maybe they just have to train employees a little better, they should at least have some basic computer skills if they work in the computer dept.
Sorry for the rant but it truley becomes frustrating at times.

I guess each BB may be different, but I can confidently say that the all the BBs sales folks I've visited (California, Texas, Illinois, NY and Mass) share pretty much the same limited knowledge on notebooks (especially Asus notebooks). Ask them about Expressgate and I'm sure the majority of them will look at you puzzled.

I agree with David on the BB situation hehe the best was when they kept on trying to get me to buy a years worth of GeekSquad support for over $200!!! I mean are you serious. GeekSquad is a disgrace. But ya so the blue screen occurs right before the partition choice screen should come up. I have no idea what is going on with it. I might just stick with Vista now. Its slowly growing on me. One more question..I have my laptop on my lap now as im laying in bed and the right side of the trackpad is getting pretty hot on my right palm..Did you happen to notice this too?

I'm guessing it's your SATA controller causing the issue here. The norm for installing XP (from Vista) is to either 1. set your drive to compatible mode in your BIOS before installation, or 2. slipstream XP with the SATA driver.

As for the right palm rest getting warm, that's normal since below it is where the hard drives sit.

I was gonna ask if you have AHCI enabled (or not in ide emulation mode whatever asus has availiable). But i dont think the install even gets past loading in drivers to start anything before it crashes.

    EDIT - .....mad late?

I just bought an X5 would anyone be able to tell me which drivers are the best ones to use?

EDIT: Oh and I live the UK and I bought it from the US, will a normal plug converter work or will I need a voltage transformer as well?

Try the latest graphics driver from laptopvideo2go or from nvidia. All the other drivers from the drivers disk will be just fine.

For the plug, all you need is a converter. The power adapter is able to run 100V-220V, so you don't need a transformer, but please do double check with the warning label on your power adapter.

I went to Best Buy a few times and beat on the G50vt-X5 some. It feels VERY solid, and it had the best keyboard out of all the models there (some of the HP's, keyboard was like a friggin' trampoline!). I couldn't find any flex, it was just solid. Keys were spaced well and felt good to type on.

The trackpad was nice and spacious, and as David mentioned the matte finish is a great material. The touchpad buttons were a bit odd, as the back of the button is attached to the chassis, so its like pressing down a flap. It's odd, but I'm sure you could get used to it. Other than that, I really liked the glowing light around the touchpad, and you can turn off the touchpad with a dedicated key.

The paint job... while I'd prefer somethign not as flashy, it's kinda cool in that it's so cheesy, it's AWESOME. I'm sure I'll get used to it eventually. The only thing I didn't like was that it was a bit heavy, and that was without a battery.

That's the price you pay for performance though. Just need to get a backpack and it's all good :p

Yes, it comes installed with the Direct Console overclocking software.

I believe the G50 series uses Direct Console to overclock the CPU. Either way, all Asus utilities will be pre-installed out of the box.

i just bought the X5 last night. i had originally bought the x83xb-x1, but it wasnt what i was looking for, and the glossy keys really annoyed me and picked up a lot of dirt/oil.

but i'm very happy with the g50vt-x5. using the DOX 182.05 drivers in vista-x64 and performance is solid. although using the dox drivers makes my card appear now as a 9800m GT, normal?

it is a bit heavier than i expected but its ok. i really like it. only gripe is that it it has a spot for a second HDD but the HDD caddy for it isnt there, lol. and i will probably upgrade the processor, any suggestions? what processors work?

one more thing. i noticed the "mesh" on the bottom for the CPU fan intake, but there is no actual hole for air to come in, is this normal? i would think there should be an opening to allow air directly in. is it not blocked off in some higher end models? anywhere where i could obtain the vented cover if one exists? or is it just for show on all models?

GT is normal as showing up its a GS but it says GT.

You could just remove the plastic covering the otherside of the panel but as vicous has pointed out in his nice diagram (too lazy to find) the blocked "vent" causes the air to be foricbly sucked from the other vents and drawn over the components.

He and many others say do not uncover the vent as it may cause other components to heat up more and just end up a bad situation.

All P series processors work and apparently the X9100 (not the X9000) and the T9550.

Hard drive caddy isnt really avaliable but since the connector is standard just pad the second drive.

Do NOT remove the vent. As ClutchX2 said, ViciousXUSMC made a nice post about it. Basically, opening the vent would allow more air to get in, but it would lessen the pressure of the air coming in over major components such as RAM and GPU. Best to keep it closed.

As for the hard drive caddy, I believe it is this:

If it's the wrong one, I know David has the link.

ok, just seems weird to have that visual element with no real purpose. its like "hey, look what COULD be here!" lol. i admit, i started to take the thick plastic sticker off underneath but it looked like there was no hole underneath so i put it back on. i was worried that it would overheat but coretemp shows that it runs cooler than my watercooled desktop (although it is heavily OCed) lol.

one more thing, is there a way to turn off the speed step technology (or EIST, whatever you want to call it) via bios? maybe an available option in a bios update? its not a huge deal, just curious if i could.

There is a whole nother thread on some guy wondering about the speed step. I dont think the G50 has a bios option for that. In general it wont severly impact performance and if its at all noticible it would be a split second and then everything's fine.

I used to game on my amd laptop in balanced mode on the go never had any real performance issue out ofit but i can still understand the want to keep it up to speed.

I don't own a laptop atm. But I was told that most 9800M GT laptops run around 8000 with 3dmark06. So 9120 sounds good to me, but like I said, I don't own one :)

This is a 9800m GS laptop. The 9800m GT runs around the mid 9000's.
