Maximum PC | Apple Forces Pegatron to Drop Asus Ultrabook

I suggest if you want one you should buy it quick

After Steve Jobs death, Apple has been doing a lot of legal claims and crazy acts, but this one just surprises me.

Read link above. Tell the forum what you think about it.

Btw, am I posting in the wrong section? Should I post it elsewhere? I can't post it in the "news" section tho (says I don't have privileges)

That doesn't necessarily mean the end of the zenbook although it might. Pegatron is indeed an offshoot of Asus from when it decided to outsource it's ODM business (back in 2007), but it's possible Asus might just go look elsewhere to have the zenbook manufactured if there isn't anything preventing them from going to another ODM.

This looks like Apple trying to kill the zenbook without suing. This at the very least looks like Apple is seeing the zenbook as a threat. I doubt Asus will let things go that way either as in they could threaten Pegatron to take all of their business away from them (i doubt they will), but it's a game that can be played both ways and there will always be competitors waiting to take the business too.

EDIT: Don't turn this in an Apple vs PC debate or Apple bashing thread by the way ;)

There could be many reasons for an ODM switch:

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/asus/637772-ux31-completely-dead-help.html

In any case, with Ivy Bridge around the corner, not to mention AMD alternatives, there could be many reasons for suspending production. Actually with the Macbook Pro refresh coming this year, Apple might need additional production capacity. We should all remember, that in this high end segment, Apple almost completely dominates in terms of volumes.

Don't rush to buy a Zenbook unless there's a clearance or sale. There are plenty of "ultrabooks" on the way.

Foxconn is already building some Eee PC models and Quanta has been making the A/K/X series if I remember that right.

If this is truly the case than this didn't happen overnight. Pegatron undoubtedly has a contract with Asus from which they cant just back out of.

My guess is that the contract between Asus and Pegatron is up at the end of March and both parties knew this was the end for a long time which gave Asus the opportunity to set up another supplier.

I'd be surprised if there was even a hiccup in production.

The article does not say Asus is stopping production of the UX31, (contrary to this misleadingly titled thread) only that one outside production facility (Pegatron, coincidentally once part of ASUS and spun off just recently) *perhaps* will no longer produce both Apple products and the UX31.

There are other production facilities available to ASUS.
