Hmm. Posted in the Mac forums, but not here. While I like the look of the Mac (hardware) I'm not a fan of the OS, mainly 'cause I'm so unfamiliar. As far as I know, even with Windows installed on the Mac, you still couldn't game due to limitations on the GPU - is this correct? I'm curious, as my brother has a macbook.

    Thanks!

[Edit -oops, yep I guess I saw it here, too - Sorry! http://forums.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=48006]

honestly dont know why people are so hyped about this unless they love apple or apple's OS that much, i mean honestly...why pay $500+ over the price of a normal laptop just to run windows on a mac? i'd pic an asus over an apple anyday...granted they're pretty much gonna be of equal build since asus makes the apple chassis. i'll save that extra $500 for my next laptop :p

... because the reality is that an ASUS can't run Mac OS while an Apple hardware can both run Mac OS and Windows natively with little problems.

Absolutely agreed. My interest in this is really for my brother - I'm a "PC" person :)

dude, ur missing his point. macs are 500 freakin bucks more than asus machines with similar specs. Unless u use professional software like finalcut pro or maya, macs really aren't worth the extra money.

(yes i know there's a windows version of maya, but if ur a professional, ur gonna wanna b working on something a bit more stable),

It is possible, it's been hacked, but it isn't legit, and I don't think it works too well most of the time.

Give me a reasoni would want to run OSX. If i can run linux and XP on an amd or intel box. what does OSX offer to anyone but a novice that someone cant get from linux. and my Windows machines are spam and virus free for years now.

Personally, I find OSX to have a more elegant UI than most Linux ones, and less fuss to maintain. And it still has the power under the hood being based on BSD.

I use Linux on a regular basis, by the way. I'm a Debian guy because apt is so fine.

It'll be interesting to see what the summer brings: ASUS-Apple 13.3" Powerbook and the offical release of Boot-Camp.
It truelly could be a great computer to some people; Dual-link DVI, Firewire (400), a backlite keyboard, a slot-loading DVD burner and a decent video card, etc.
Does anyone know if it'd be vista compatible, has Dual-link DVI-I (for VGA, Component, DVI-D and Dual-link DVI) or if the ASUS Powerbook will use a conreo based cpu?
I'd love to get a 12"-14" asus powerbook with a decent video card, Dual-link DVI-I, good battery life, backlite keyboard, light sensor, metal casing, with tri-booting (windows, linux, and apple os), etc.
Now if only it came in black.

I'm running a theme like that now off of userinterfacelift. Not bad, but not quite the same. Several years back I used some of the Stardock stuff, but it was kind of piggy.

Not really a problem, more of a preference.

For people who like these little powerbooks, just get yourself an Asus 13.3" that looks just like those, without the backlit keyboards.

W5 is a fine, fine, FOOOOOINE, machine. I'd take it over a powerbook, ibook, whatever book anyday. Price is much less too isn't it?

Man some people just don't know that Asus builds many Sony's, Apples, they just won't believe me when I tell them.

All they say is, "Yo, my Sony is the bomb digity (or something like that), it's better than your whatever Asus or whatever. I haven't even heard of that stuff."

Even Cnet doesn't know or pretends not to know. I remember reading about the W1 and the W2, and in one of those articles the Cnet guys were saying how the W1 or W2 looked so much like the Apple notebooks and that it was a design COPY. Jeez.

    Cheers,
    Mike

Most people that buy a Macbook aren't professionals (although Powermacs ARE used more often by them), more like people that want to distinguish themselves from the rest and like to pay extra for it. You pay 500 bucks extra for the design (which is really incomparable to ANY PC notebook, not even the Vaio's), features like the fancy keyboard backlight, a DVI connection, etc. and the fact that there is an apple logo on the lid (which stands for exclusiveness and guaranteed questions from others "Wow that's a nice notebook!"). I'm not an Apple fanboy (that's why I have a W2V :D ), but people stating that it's just 500 bucks down the drain for the same specs are shortsighted in my opinion...

If this bootcamp software is a real success my next notebook might actually be an Apple, since compatibility with games and other "Windows only"-software was the biggest reason for not buying an Apple.

According to the latest rumor Apple is releasing a new 13.3" Macbook in 30-60 days. And get this: It's suppose to have a 1280x720 resolution! I love it! True 16:9 and full screen DVD's and widescreen TV-shows!

I agree with you, Chevron. The powerbook is more than just average notebook with an Apple logo on it.
I'd buy a dual-booting powerbook in spite of it's heiritage because it has so many things that are above and beyond the notebook norm.
Regarding the W2, the W2 is an amazing notebook in many respects, but I wouldn't buy it simply because of it's size (17"); I'd want a 12"-14" portable monster.
    BTW, I currently own a W3v.

There is software called "PearPC" that will work similarly Virtual PC for Windows emulation on a Mac. The OSX runs within Windows, however it is somewhat slow because of the resources required. I'm not aware of any way to dual-boot a PC with OSX, but as others have said I'm not sure why you'd want to. An OSX skin can be just as nice and half the hassle :)
