So my temps were kind of out of control on my G51VX-RX05 and I got some Arctic MX-2 and took it apart. When I pulled the heat sinks off I was shocked that the thermal compound was hard and not even sticking to the GPU, there wasn't even any residue on the CPU and there was NO COMPOUND AT ALL on the chipset just bare copper on the top of the chip. I cleaned them all off with alcohol and made sure it was all dry, dabbed the MX-2 on and put the heat sinks back (I left the original thermal pads on the video memory). This was RMA'ed twice before and one time they replaced the motherboard.. I have a feeling they didn't use fresh compound when they put it back together as the temps were higher after I got it back, which makes sence since the chipset had no compound on it and that's soldered on the board. Now my GPU has so far hit a max of 86c under load after the MX-2 and was hitting 100c before under load.

That's a great drop in temp! I'm thinking of doing the same thing on my A1 but I'm a bit worried about the warranty. Anyway glad to hear that worked well for you. :D

It could be that they did not apply enough thermal compound on the GPU.
The thermal compound usually also get harder with time.
Was your machine already out of warranty?

I got it as a refurb, so it only had a 3 month warranty. I ran Furmark on it last night and it hit 97c but then gradually went down.. it was idle at 71c. I guess even the MX-2 does need time to "cure" because after running Furmark for about 30 minutes it dropped to 89c and now is 63c at idle.
