Should I get a G1 now or a G1S in a months time?
-
Flip a coin?
It's your choice, the G1s will be out in about a month(more or less), but in 4-6 months after that, Penryn is around the corner, so there is yet another update. Then 3-5 months after that....
Well, you know -
How much more will the G1S be?
-
The G1S will likely be at approximately the same price as the old one.
-
The G1s should stay at the same price point as the current G1p. I would wait for the G1s because of the DX10 graphics and the fact that it will be compatible with the 45nm Penryn processors that Cori mentioned.
-
Guess I'll wait a few weeks for my G1S then! Ty for all your help. Much appreciated.
-
Sorry, I did not mean to invade...
What's 45nm Penryn processors? -
The next gen processor after santa rosa..
-
Penryn, the successor to the Santa Rosa generation of processors, will be a 45 nanometer production process. This matters because a smaller process means you can fit more transistors on a processor, in effect increasing the aggregate raw power of a processor. A smaller process also means more electrical efficiency, as voltage isn't lost as much with a smaller process, so the processor will run with less energy and less heat.
Penryn will be released later this year in Q4. There will be desktop versions of Penryn, as well as mobile versions. The next mobile platform will be the release of Montevina Q2 of next year, which will feature the all-new 45nm Penryn processors. -

This is quite a common question, especially when the next generation of laptops are coming out.
The rule of thumb is if you need a laptop now, buy it and don't look back. But if you can wait, then wait as along as you possibly can before you get a laptop. In this particular case the G1S is right around the corner, and if you can hold out for it, do it. Either way, the G1P and G1S will be very pleasing for you.
Regarding the price, there will be roughly a $100-$200 price increase, but it is still worth it because it comes with a fast T7500 processor. -
G1 1799$
G1s 1999$
http://www.milestonepc.com/states/product_info.php?cPath=87_82&products_id=1505
The G2s only increased by 100$ compared to the G2p -
The main reasons is probably the chassis change, the G1p has the original body of the A6 which had the PCMCIA slot. They probably changed the chassis, which resulted in the slight price increase, as well as new technology(Santa Rosa + 8600).
-
The two notebooks still look the same
I had been hoping they'd get rid of that silly space above the screen, makes it look really odd.
-
ok nvm, i see ur pricing is USD. I still dont get why theres a $300 diff between the G1s and G2s -
-
No, its only $100. The latest revision of the G1p with Vista and stuff retailed for $1899, so if the G1s is $1999....The faster processor and newer stuff overall make it well worth the extra cash though.

I have a similar problem..
What would you chose and why?
A Asus G1 T7200 2GB or a G1s T7100 with 1Gb memory. The G1s cost about $200 less than the G1. I'm no hardcore gamer just playing wow or some other regular game. Other than that i will use it for work using Vista and Office 2007. Would you buy the G1s or G1? Would be grateful for any comments. Also if I take the G1s will I actually be able to upgrade it with a newer processor, say the processor coming in 2008, merovin or something i think it was called? -
Go for the G1s if it cheaper. For 200$ you can easily upgrade to 2gb later if you feel it is needed and still have money left over. You wont notice the differance between the T7100 and T7200.
The new CPU is called Penryn and yes it might be possilbe. Might need a bios upgrade and it is never sure that Asus will privide one. The Socket P stays the same so upgradeing should work. -
As for comparing the two systems, if you're no hardcore gamer then I would just go with the old G1. It's a proven system, countless units sold and immense numbers of posts on NBR about it already. Most, if not all of the posts are full of nothing but good comments about it (come to think of it, I've yet to find a thread criticising the G1). The new system is not necessarily the same. Though it seems they've kept the same chassis, there's no telling what might go wrong when they upgrade things. the Geforce 7700GO in the older G1 will still last a few years if you're no hardcore gamer. To be honest, the 8600GT won't let you play directx10 games with directx10 features anyway, as it's not powerful enough. Consider it a slightly increase of power. -
Ok, thanks alot for your help! Guess i'll buy a new one instead in 2-3 years. It should be no problem with it until that time i guess.
Regards -
question, when will the asus G1S-A1 come out? and are asus notebook a good investment, I mean are they good, do they last long, could you compare the quality of a dell and Hp with a asus and say they are the same?
-
From the company i could order, the G1s will be available at the end of may or beginning of june, that is in approx 2-3 weeks from now.
-
can you buy a asus notebook on their website? I can`t find the option "purchase" or "buy" or anything
-
Oh my god, i'm so stupid i wish i'd die! In all this looking around at different models and so on i finally mixed up the models. The G1s that i was refereing to was not a G1s but a F3SV, i'm really sorry for this mix up and you all have my deepest apologies for this grand mistake!!
-
Do we have any battery benchmarks on the G1S yet? How does it compare to the G1?
-
Pictures of the g1s.. looks exactly the same as g1

Look at the device manager screen, it's a T7300 cpu ?? Strange!? -
Thanks for the link. This clears up many things :
1 - ASUS G1S has a 8600M GT not a 8600M GS.
2 - ASUS G1S HAS E-SATA! (and also HDMI though I think everybody knows this)
3- ASUS G1S has a different chassis than ASUS G1. -
I like the E-Sata! Hopefully it is a good chip with good speed. I was annoyed when I found out that the Intel Mobile 965 didnt support E-SATA. Hopefully more notebooks will have it.
Its a pretty good deal at 1689€ in Germany. I am impressed. -
Since I'm gonna be in Canada soon I'm thinking of buying a G1s over there from MilestonePC. The total price (with an 7200 100GB) is somewhere around 2300 Canadian Dollars. That's about 1400 euro, which is a sweet deal, considering the fact I would pay around 1800 euro when buying it in Europe.
-
I am really thinking about buying this one.
Where are some good places to buy it? Can any of the major electronic stores sell it?
If not, what are some trust worthy websites who will sell it? What about warranties if I buy it from a website?
Can I get a full three year warranty with the accident plan?
Thanks -
Bestbuy had the G1 so maybe the G1s too. For online look here:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=122632
All the dealers there are trust worthy. Warrenties will work through Asus but the dealers will help you too I am sure. -
personally i'd buy from newegg, i trust them the most
http://www.newegg.com
they don't have the g1s listed yet however -
-
I am not the one who is looking to buy
Tarheelscubs was the one asking and he is based in NC. I might want to buy too but I will do so localy -
has anyone got any photos of the outside of th Asus G1S? i am now seriously considering it having read all this juicy info on it, but if it has a garish outside like the XPS series then it is not for me (lights flashing etc)
-
I am pretty sure ithe G1s will have green lights similar if not exactly the same as the G1
http://www.xoticpc.com/reviews/G1/3593003.jpg -
How come people say the G1 and G1s have a different chassis? I don't see any difference.
-
Because the G1S has HDMI and E-SATA which G1 doesn't have.
Also I think there might be some other minor differences. -
is it possible to turn these off? as they dont look to professional in a meeting or presentation?
-
I remember so.[Anyway the lights will flash only if DirectX is active]
-
How come on the link to the G1S in the device manager 2 processors are listed?
-
The dual-core laptops are listed as two different CPUs.
-
I'm on my schools computer yet the pentium 4 is listed twice on here (Pentium 4 3.0GHZ) it's listed twice under processors in the device manager. Hmm.
-
I have seen those , they are also Dual-Core CPUs so they show up as two Processors in the Device Manager.
-
If it hadn't been for the +10% NZ price over that which I can get it for in Europe and the fact I was waiting for the G1S, I'd have taken that offer too. -
The one thing that I have not seen yet is if the G1S still has the pcmia card. If it still does that is an almost no buy for me.
btw is the internal sata controller 3 of 1.5? -
Please don't confuse people here...
The Pentium 4 in question is not a DUAL CORE!!!...
Some Pentium 4 have a little something called HyperThreading or HT Technology which by the way was a total INTEL fiasco... They DO NOT contain multiple cores in the die chip, they just have a stupid and useless trick that multi-threads processes and that's why they show up in Windows as having two physical processors or cores.
I know this because my desktop is a P4 HT and my G1 is a C2D...
Peace!
RayanMX -
^ It is probably a machine that has 2 processors or the ability for two processors. All the HT machines I have seen they only show one proc in performance under task manger and in device manger.
-
So I guess A8Js wont be coming out with an 8600? I think I might skip Santa Rosa and go with Montevina.
