    Hi,

With the recent price cuts to the 1000H, I'm thinking about selling my 6-cell MSi Wind. I value its battery life and on Vista, it lasts close to 5 hours with Wifi, no BT, 2 notches up on screen brightness, and web surfing. I was wondering what battery life that people have been getting with the Asus WITH Vista. Also, how significant is the form between the Asus 8.9" to the 10.1" and the form factor difference between the 1000H and the Wind (screen height, quality, weight, size, touchpad,...). The touchpad has worn quite easily on my Wind so I'd like to know if Asus's touchpad resists wear (like the hP DV series).

    Thanks

I would like to know where you got a 6cell MSI Wind. I can't even find any MSI Winds let alone a 6cell one.

I would imagine that the 1000H's battery life should be just as good. They are pretty much identical machines. The 1000H has wireless N, I wonder if that will use more power.

I can't say much about the Wind vs 1000H form factor wise other than the 1000H being slightly larger and quite a bit heavier from a netbook reference (3.2 lbs).

People have said the touch pad is good but the buttons are hard to press.

I am thinking of getting the 1000H too. $449 is not a bad price for it I think.

I have no numbers on the battery life of the 1000H.

However, I wish to warn about a general drawback of ASUS machines: their battery life is usually below the competitors'. Again, the netbooks may be an exception to this rule.

Im looking around at all the ultra mini's and have found the best deals I think.

Keep in mind I am looking for one with a hard drive 80gb+ none of that SSD stuff since I want music/movies on mine, and trying to find 6cell battery only not 3 cell.

so here are my top picks:

    Acer Aspire One: $399 - http://www.amazon.com/Acer-8-9-inch...3?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1221038293&sr=8-3

Pros: Has 1gb Ram, 160gb HDD, Windows XP, Wireless, 6 Cell Battey, Cheap!
    Cons: No Bluetooth

    MSI Wind: $499 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834152066

Pros: 1gb Ram, 120gb HDD, Windows XP, Bluetooth, Black Color,
    Cons: 3 cell battery!

I have found some with the 6 cell but much higher cost and not as good on the specs.

As for the Asus EEE, I dont know maybe the 1000H has recitfied all the horrible stories I heard about the earlier models, like the cramped keyboard but I am not sure so I have not looked at them, also I cant find one very cheap at all. I am however looking at the new N10 from them. Its like $600 for the lowest model not really worth it and $700 for the one with dual graphics cards.

Expensive but its fully decked out, so I am considering it and hoping to get one for review and then can decide if I want it or not.

Also while not all out yet almost every brand has a netbook on the way.

Levono, Dell, Samsung, and more so it may be good to wait for the competition to build up and then find the one that comes out on top.

The 701/901 Asus EEE PC models are netbooks. The netbook is not a machine meant for word processing! Its a cheap web browsing tool, something very small, easy to throw in a bag. The line is being blurred these days! I know the keyboards are cramped, but you can't beat the size of these things!

The 1000H is a nice machine, but IMO is the very limit in terms of size. In fact, I'd go so far as to say its no longer a netbook as such. More breaching into the Ultra mobile side of things. Each model released, slowly but surely, the price increases, and the models get bigger.

Does everyone reckon there will be a large market for the Asus N10? Im interested, starting to get pricey. You can start looking at "normal" sized notebooks with similar, if not better features for the same price.

I was always under the impression that people buy these things for the convenience of a cheap as chips, very small and portable, internet surfing machine. Maybe add in a small amount of word processing. Anything more demanding, look at a "normal" machine?

Several California-based major e-tailers have 6-cell Winds in stock today (9-10-08) for $549.99 in black and pink.

Since the innards of the MSI and Asus are the same, would batter also be the same? I'm on the Wind right now and at 88% battery I have 4 hours and 40 minutes (low brightness and wifi). Can the 1000h match or beat that time?

You should take a look at the 1000H again. It's almost the same as the Wind but it's a little larger and heavier. It's a 10" model so the keyboard is no way near as cramped as what the 7" and 8.9" are.

Also, as for price it is now $449 at several retailers like newegg, amazon, costco, mwave and excaliburpc. That is $100 less than the Wind.

Pros: wireless N, the easiest netbook to upgrade ram and hdd
Cons: larger, heavier (but still light at 3.2lbs)

I can't tell from the pictures but is the 1000h glossy on the palm rests as well? I like the gloss to keep oil and dirty from the plastic.

Im all about the EEE 1000H now, looks almost identical to the Wind, just a smaller HDD and its glossy, has a bad right shift key and that about it.

For $450 with a 6 cell thats quite good tho.

Now I am just trying to figure out if the bluetooth works with the wiimote :p if it does im sold. (need to know the BT card & stack)

MSI Wind is still great, but with the change of the touchpad and now the 1000H costing less id make the switch.

Wind has a very strong modders community tho, and I like that, plus its a matte screen and not a finger print magnet so some may be interested in it still, and it has the larger HDD.

Isn't a 9 cell battery available for the 1000h as well now?

Yeah there are some people offering 9 cell and 8 cell and some other stuff, expensive tho and not from asus these are professional 3rd party battery people.

I do belive Asus is working on the "all day computing" battery for the EEE tho that is most probably a 9 cell which in max power save mode could give you over 10 hours I would guess i the current 6 cell tops out at 7.

Personally Id rather just get another 6 cell battery if I needed more battery life, keep the form factor, will cost less, and you would have even more possible battery life like that.
