Here's a "first look" review based on a whole one weeks ownership:
    A2500D, specs as follows:

    Mobile AMD 2800+ XP
    512Mb DDR 333
    15" XGA
    60Gb HDD
    DVD-RW
    WiFi 802.11g
ATI Mobility Radeon 9600 Pro 64Mb VideoRAM
Bag, XP Pro and optical mouse included

    Best points:
    Cheap! (NZ$2700 for the above)
    Excellent specs for the price
Video handling (DVD, games, etc, smooth as at XGA&24bit colour)
    - Good old 3DMark 2000 scored 11000 at full power
    Slot city! (5 x USB 2.0, Wi-Fi included, multi-card reader included, etc)

    Average points:
Size: 3.3kg with battery is not bad, but ain't no Centrino
Battery life: 2hrs+ depending on activity
Screen is, you know, OK. Higher definition (SXGA/UXGA) would be more in sync with the
rest of the system, but hey, it's a bargain!
Functional design - not ugly, not beautiful, inoffensive aluminium lid

The price is partially to do with using an AMD processor (cheaper than the heinously expensive Intel mobile equivalents), but the CPU performance is likely to be more than enough for the vast majority of day to day applications.

    Tips/suggestions:
I installed SpeedswitchXP: http://www.diefer.de/speedswitchxp which runs in backgorund and does Intel-type speed stepping. This reduced fan use a lot, but without visible performance degradation during real life use.

    Summary:
I can't help but feel warm and fuzzy towards this piece of kit. This has virtually all the goodies you can want in a new notebook, in an average size & weight, with an average screen, at a really good price. I think others agreed - one of the chain-store sellers ran this model on special at the above price and sold out country wide within days. Long term reliability will remain to be seen.

Hope this is of some help!

    Time to Shutdown...

After a week with mine new A2500D, I have only 2 complaints, and those a minor but its a fantastic machine and very much great value.

Grumble 1 - Screen is only 1024 X 768, was hoping for 1280 or so

Grumble 2 - HDD is slow, but thats the same for all notebooks from what I can tell.

My wife has a TPG Notebook (rebaged E-machine) and its screen is 15.4" and runs at 1200 X 800 res but the HDD is slower (and smaller) than mine, so its really only minor grumps.

And compared to the time most seem to get out of the P4 notebook batteries, Mine's huge with 2 - 3 hours!! Fantastic! [ :D]

As I was writing in another topic:

I have bought an Asus A2D Notebook recently (Athlon XP-M 2800+)

I have noticed the fan at the back always runs for 35 seconds, stops for ONLY 10 seconds, then starts again (and AGAIN, and AGAIN...)
AC power mode. Super Performance mode. CPU temp is 57-60 Celsius according to Asus Probe.

Does your fan run nearly all the time too?

This seems pretty annoying to me (the temperature of 57 Celsius is normal, I think).

I would also like to know if SpeedSwitchXP fully replaces Power+Gear4, or if there is still some reasons to replace Power+ by SpeedSwitch.
