    Hi

    I've just bought a new ASUS A53A:
ASUS A53E-SX1339S 15.6" Laptop - Red buy online | Currys

I'm new to notebooks having had a desktop all my computing days.
would just like to hear your opinions on this one please.
    Is ASUS' service/backup good?
And anything you think I should know/do (tips) will be gratefully acknowledged.
    many thanks

    Bob

Looks like a very nice laptop to me :) I would uninstall any anti-virus software Asus included and install Microsoft Security Essentials. Most pre-loaded anti-virus programs slow your computer down.

Thanks for the advise. I'm thinking of changing the HDD to a SSD ( after reading the forum below), but don't have much of a clue. So would this be a good option do you think?

I don't think it's possible to send the recovery partition, since it's 5-10GB.

You can download Windows 7 from the link below and burn it to a disk with Imgburn. Once you have installed Windows, you can find the necessary drivers at Asus.com.

I believe Intel and Crucial manufacture the best SSD's. I suggest purchasing an SSD at least 120GB's in size. Depending on your needs, an SSD might not be necessary. I use the web, play Call of Duty, and write in word docs. Although I'd like an SSD, it's not really needed with my usage pattern.

You don't need Avast or any other ant-virus program if you use MSE. I like MSE because it doesn't slow my laptop down and it does a good job of keeping bugs out.
