I bought the above model for my daughter at university about 18 months ago- it worked fine for eleven months, then after smelling burning- refused to charge or work at all on adapter. Two repairs (because they just replaced battery and motherboard but did not test it worked first time) and it worked for another five months, then died again with exactly the same battery and adaper problems- dead as a doornail! We returned for repair and it was sent back untested again and did not work first time. It came back one month ago from the fourth trip to Asus uk, and worked for under a month before it died again. I wonder if the power unit is attached to the motherboard, or separate and if anyone else has had such a problem with this model. it is about to travel to Holland this time for assessment. Is this a one off rogue machine or has anyone else had similar problems? I would like a new replacement that is guaranteed to work properly. I am alarmed that we have had so many problems- could it be because it had a faulty battery in the first place? Has the battery burned out the power unit? is the battery perhaps one of the listed ones that did require recalling? Five repairs since July 2006 seem excessive to say the least. We are very distressed about this. it seemed like such a great laptop when we got it, and is very necessary for my daughter to have a working one to complete her degree course. If it only worked on the ac charger she could cope, but it would not be a laptop! The trouble is it does not work at all with charger or battery and the time and energy wasted on sending it back and forth is depressing. Please let me know if anyone else has had such an experience and how we resolve it.

It sounds to me there is a manufacturing issue here if it's happend that many times.

From what you said I think the motherboard is getting fried near the ac adapter and battery area possibly because of some transistors or a short circuit.

I would call them up and demand a new one- mention all the trouble you've had because it definitey sounds like it will keep happening with this same series notebook unless they fix the issue.
