Firstly, I'm new here, but thanks for all the detailed reviews and comments which I've been grateful to read.
I'm looking to buy a new laptop in a month or so, and I've always liked the quality and design of Asus laptops, and am thinking of buying a A8Jc (in the UK) with a 100Gig 7200rpm disk...
www.asuslaptop.co.uk/proddetail.php?prod=Asus_Laptop_A8Jc-H002H
I'm planning to use it for a lot of general stuff, but also for music production, so I was hoping that Asus used a Texas Instruments firewire card, but from what I've read, it sounds like a Ricoh card is used in their other laptops. Apparently this can lead to compatability problems with external firewire soundcards (such as a Focusrite Saffire or Presonus Firebox).
So...
- Do the A8 laptops also use Ricoh firewire cards
- I was suprised to see that it's listed as having a PCMCIA slot... will I be OK to use a PCMCIA sound card such as the Echo Indigo
- Has anyone in the UK had experience using the guys linked above - they seem to sell at a good price, and with the ability to upgrade the hdd & memory (covered by the Asus warranty?)
- Anyone had successful - or otherwise - experiences using Asus laptops for music production?
Lots of questions I know! Cheers for any answers.

There isn't PCMCIA slot in A8Jc/m/a. There is ExpressCard slot instead.
-
That's what I thought, but it's listed on the asuslaptop.co.uk site with...
'Type II PCMCIA 2.1 compliant'
But right enough, it's listed elsewhere as having an ExpressCard slot, so I guess it's an error on that site -
My other option was to get a USB 1.1 soundcard from eBay, and use that until ExpressCard soundcards come out

I bought my laptop from those guys (KL Computers) and it was hassle free. I have found the A8Jc cheaper here, its up to you if you want to buy it from that store or ask KL computers to pricematch which is what they did for me. Just give em a call they are nice enough people.
I havent used my laptop for music production but I really like Asus. I had heard they are really good quality but you just cant feel whats its like till you have one. I think you will be very happy with your purchase. -
Thanks for the replies... I've sent an email with a few questions to KL Computers.
I'll probably go for a small USB1.1 soundcard - possibly this from Alesis...

And hopefully in a year or two there'll be loads of ExpressCard soundcards around.
