Hey guys. I'm trying to downgrade my current windows vista to windows XP on my Asus A8Jr, but I've been having some trouble. I looked all over the forums and the closest thing I found that relates to the problem is with the SATA drivers.

I initially tried formatting and installing with my original win xp SP2 disc but after the installation and reboot, it says missing operating system. Then after looking through the forums (particularly http://forum.notebookreview.com/showpost.php?p=2097089&postcount=95 ), it seems like i needed to slipstream the SATA drivers into the SP2 disc. Thus i did (with some huge confusion about which textmode driver to use), and tried the formatting, installation and rebooting again. This time, it doesn't say missing operating system, but it seems to have trouble loading windows and just deadlocks with nothing appearing on the screen except for the flashing underscore.

I wanted to access the tutorial on http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=90380&highlight=Missing+Operating+System but the file is down..

During the installation there was also a recovery partition, but I'm guessing if I ever want to use the recovery discs again, I had better not mess with it.

Can anyone help me with this problem? Any help is greatly appreciated! :)

I don't have any experience doing this but I did see this thread on the Lenovo forum. I'm not sure if it applies to ASUS machines as well, but the bios SATA settings might have something to do with getting XP back on there: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=136351

I myself own the A8Jr and also replaced Vista with XP. However, what I did differently compared to your process is that I removed the recovery partition. The recovery partition is if you wanted a quick recovery (since accessing the hard drive is faster than accessing a DVD). If you want, you can later use the DVD to recover Vista.

What I assume is that the recovery partition is conflicting with some settings in XP. Try reformatting and removing the recovery partition.

    Hope this helps.

Thanks for the tips guys, and it was the recovery partitions fault. After deleting it, everything went well. Thanks a lot!
