both machines seem to be very similar, other than the G1 having a 15.4" screen versus the A8Js's 14.1" screen. based on the reviews on this site, the A8Js has better 3dmark05 and 3dmark06 benchmarks even though the G1 is advertised as a gaming machine. and the battery life for both machines seem to be pretty similar also. so is there any significant difference between the two machines that i should know about? i think as of now im leaning towards the A8Js because i want to have a fairly portable machine (though capable of decent gaming) since il be going to college this coming fall.

The A8js is not better. The G1 was benched at 1280x1024 and the A8Js at 1280x 800 because it cant display 1280x1024 on its screen.

The A8Js is alot more portable if you can wait maybe wait for the F8 which will replace the A8.

They're very similar, performance wise although the G1 has a higher resolution display to drive. Of course, you can always run your games at a lower resolution so this needn't be a show stopper.

The two deciding factors will be price and portability... with the A8Js edging ahead in both categories. Also, the "bling" on the G1 is a love it or hate it kind of thing... personally, I hate it.

IIRC, the G1 only has a PCMCIA slot as opposed to the newer ExpressCard since it's based on the older Asus A6 chassis. Considering the scarcity of ExpressCard solutions for many applications this may not be a bad thing...

To be honest I think you have answered your own question. The overall performance of the A8js and portability of it just makes sense for you. Plus you have also determined that for yourself.

Sure the nice bigger G1P screen would be quite appealing, but it will be heavier and has a larger footprint.

If you need more battery life as well, just purchase an extra main battery, this way you can finish a 2 hour lecture, and then swap it out and put in the new one and get ready for the next lecture.

well, i was wondering whether the additional weight and size of the G1 or some other high-powered 15.4" laptop would be worth the extra processing/graphics power. and i've also heard rather unpleasant things about the asus A8j line screens.

well the g1 comes with a better screen not just larger.

You can tell in person but if nothing else, the lcd costs 100$ more from wholesalers if you want to replace it.
