I am planning to buy a new multimedia notebook for web design.

I have considered several notebook. Howver I have narrowed it down
to either the Asus A8Js or the Dell Inspiron E1505. So far I believe
the Asus gives you more for your money as a multmedia machine,
Howver i want to make sure that I am not missing something. know Dell
does seem to have good support.

I want to buy the notebook by Monday so i am seeking any advice
    available.

    Thanks,
    Chris B

Dells are going to be cheaper and have faster warranty service. They also have a much larger support network in place and you won't be dealing with a reseller. Asus has more options and will offer more bang for your buck. That said, dell can offer a fair deal of performance for under 1200, while most Asus machines are going to start at around $1300.

If you have a budget, go for Dell -- If you need the performance, go for Asus.

well one thing is that the ajs has a way better gpu than the dell. If you dont care about that, then go for the dell, since you can probably get it a lot cheaper than the a8js. I personally do not like dell notebooks (w/exception to the Latitude D620), they're bulky and ugly lol.

no contest, the A8. the E1505's only strong point is that it's cheap. Otherwise it's pretty big and bulky for a 15.4", not very attractive, incredibly common, and has a weaker GPU.

Immediate win! Asus A8Js punchs Dell's Inspiron E1505 out of the ring, and it shatters due to bad quality!

Haha, just kidding. The Asus A8Js does win though. Dell's Inspiron E1505 is cheaper, and highly configurable in terms of specs and warranty options, while the A8Js is much more powerful (due to the NVIDIA GeForce 7700) and better build quality. Also, the design of the A8Js is nicer :D.

As said above by otakuoverlord, take Dell for budget and Asus for power and quality.

as previously stated it has more gpu power, better built, and lighter i believe, plus it looks way cool

Well you have to consider that if you are doing design you will need a good screen which is not a particular strong point of the A8js. This is a 14.1" screen vs a 15.4" so, what do you want more screen relestate or portability.

If you want more screen consider the Asus F3jp. For the same amount as the A8js the F3jp has a higher resolution screen (not to mention a better one) and comes with a cooler running GPU (slightly less powerful but hardly noticeable perhaps 1-3 FPS less in a game) So that might be worth looking into.

Well, I always have to count my pennies when buying computer gear, so Dell usually winds up with my money =)

I wouldn't mind an Asus or a Sony if I had the extra cash, don't get me wrong, but Dell has always delivered on low-cost, highly reliable, and quite strong systems when I buy from them. I never have trouble recommending a Dell if there's any talk of budget. (God I want an SLI notebook) I can also speak very highly of their warranty service, for something you ostensibly get for free, I feel like you actually are a customer rather than a burden.

Just remember, ugly and clunky sometimes beats out sleek and broken. (COUGH sony COUGH) - Not to point fingers or anything.

Enjoy and good luck with whatever you wind up with.

The screen on the a8js is so much better than the screen on the e1505 its ridiculous.

I would feel more confident dropping the e1505 though its pretty tough.

I would feel better about dropping it because i wouldnt care as much if it did break too. I might drop it on a daily basis.

    dell batteries are cheaper.

the non pro dell wireless card, the 1390 has better range than the 3945 pro intel card that comes on asus and dell. Ive tested it.

Those are some good points about the e1505

Err.. I am not sure which screen you saw but the top of the line WSXGA and the bottom of the line WXGA screens are exceptionally good. I can be standing at a 170 degree angle to the screen and still see whats on it very clearly. Colors are crisp and well defined (color reproduction seems good though I am hardly an expert on that) Perhaps you saw one of the poorer screen options? I am not sure who made the screens though.

there are quite a few screens for the e1505

Ive seen a lot of them too.

Much murkier and dimmer. It does have a better viewing angle.

If you have seen both screens and you even compare them you are on some other planet than me.
    Im sure you havent actually.
Ive seen the wsxga and wxga. wxga is using an lg screen from something like 5 years ago.

Not even in the same ballpark.

the wxga screen that a lot of e1505 owners want is actually the same auo screen thats in the s96j

i was in the same quandary , and decided to ditch Dell ( i have had HORRIBLE Inspiron ownership experiences in the past), and decided to spend the extra $200 or so to get better quality components.

I bought an A8jp from Newegg, and needless to say, I am not disappointed. For less than what I paid for the A8jp, I was able to config an e1505 with:

    15.4" WSXGA+
    Core 2duo t5400
BT, Intel wireless n built in
    2GB ram, 120 GB hdd
    XP pro

I sacrificed on the wireless card , higher res screen and extra gig of ram AND paid a lil more for my a8jp. I'd do the same all over again.

Its not about upfront $$$, its about TCO (total cost of ownership), and if my past experiences with the Inspiron line are anything to go by, Id rather spring for the Asus upfront and be worry free.

Oh I forgot to mention that the WXGA screen I was comparing to was a matte screen so I don't know if that makes a difference, probably does though.
