After ranking No. 5 in terms of shares of the global market for notebook PCs in the first quarter of this year, Asus, a Taiwan-based PC brand, aims to become one of world's top five notebook PC brands in 2011, according to Johnney Shih, chairman of the brand.

Citing IDC's statistics, Shih said that his brand outpaced Dell and Toshiba as No. 3 with a 9.9% share in the consumer segment and shipment of more than 3.5 million units in the fourth quarter of 2009, only trailing HP and Acer.

Obviously well on its way to becoming a globally leading brand, Asus posted overall notebook PC shipment of 4.64 million units for the first quarter of this year, up 114.8% from a year earlier, and a 5.5% global market share as the fifth-largest, with. HP, Acer, Dell and Lenovo ranking among the top four brands of the world, Gartner's statistic compilation shows.

Shih noted that Asus's recent shining sales performance has boosted his confidence of seeing the brand squeeze into the world's top three notebook PC brand list soon. To achieve the goal, he added, his brand will be focused promotion on both commercial and consumer notebook PCs in the coming quarters.

On the other hand, considering that traditional desktop PCs have been gradually replaced by notebook models, Asus has already switched its focus onto development and sales of all-in-one PCs and other innovative products to drive up its overall PC shipments this year. Allegedly, the brand has adjusted upward its annual shipment projection to 22 million notebook PCs itself for this year.

ASUS as a notebook brand is becoming more and more popular.
In 2006 when I bought my first notebook from them, they were not that well knows here in Germany.

Now I have my third notebook from them and there are thousands of shops selling their products here in Germany. :D

I'd love to see a professional notebook from Asus, with the beefiest ATi Pro GPU possible. Mmmm, that would be awesome.

If that's the case, I want them to try beating Apple, Sony and other "Boutique" brands at their own game. Put the best possible hardware into thin chassis made of premium materials.

The upcoming U33 is a good start, but it may lack a backlit keyboard any only has a Nvidia 310gfx card instead of a 330 or 335? I also hear that in the Americas it may only come equipped with a Core i3 when it supports i5s/ i7-620, and the screen quality is suspect. Stop cutting corners and push the envelope!

They need to learn how to get their products from concept to market faster if they're going to do that.

They also need a new marketing team. Or get a marketing team I guess. Naming scheme would be nicer too. Acer has kind of catchy names like Timeline and Gemstone now, Asus has.... uhh.... g70 series XD I know they have it in them, they did come up with eeePC afterall.

Come of Asus, use some of that money for marketing!
