It looks as though the Asus W2 chassis is used by Apple on their 17" MacBook Pro units. Does Asus also make the 15" Apple chassis, and any info on a re-builder would be appreciated? I could not find any info. on the Asus North American website. I really like the chassis, but am not ready to make the switch to Leopard. To have one "Custom" built with Vista would be great. Any help on this would be apreciated.

I can't remember who makes the MBP units, but I think it was more than one OEM company.

The W2 chassis is an old design (now 3+ years) from Asus' former BuiltOnAsus whitebox line, it is not the same as the MBP chassis. Some of the concepts, such as the receding hinge, have been incorporated on various manufacturer's products in the past year such as Dell, HP while they have been in the MBP line for some time.

If you want XP/Vista on a MBP, you have to do it through BootCamp. Asus, nor does any OEM manufacturer, does not make their OEM products like chassis' that are manufactured for companies like Apple, Dell, HP, etc available to the public for purchase. Even if you got your hands on a cheap used MBP chassis, simply trying to install XP or Vista on a HDD in a MBP shell would likely never work because of (I would think) potential driver problems/conflicts.

ASUS had the W1, which is a mini W2, almost. Same weight, different dimensions. It was only sold in Canada and Europe for a while, and since has gone into hibernation(or retirement?).

ASUS only made the iBook and at one time the Macbook, but the orders for all Apple notebooks have since gone to Quanta and Compal for reasons(Apple realized ASUS is a threat, thus another reason why ASUS split into 3 subcompanies, ASUS, Pegatron(MAXIMIZE!) and Unihan.

One of them is the ODM which produces laptops for other brands. (Pegatron I believe)

ASUS itself remains the notebook brand.

The Unihan thing I don't remember exactly, maybe desktop components?
