    Hi

My Hard drive failed ( one month after the 24 month warranty expired ! ).

I have my DVD recovery disks & an external DVD drive, but after booting from that & seeing the 'loading files' message, I end up with a message telling me the path to the image file is not found. Damn.

So I go back to my original win7 dvd media & boot from that. This loads the files then just displays the pretty grey screen & does nothing. Its been sitting there for about 30 minutes so far. Is it likely to be formatting the new drive ? Or should I see some kind of message telling me what is happening ?

I am hoping that my recovery disk 2 works ok ( unlike disk 1 ) will contain all the drivers for the laptop otherwise I guess its a case of downloading them on to a usb stick from the asus support site...

    Any advice appreciated

Your drive may still be covered under the manufacturer's warranty; disk drives tend to have anywhere from 2 years to 5 years coverage.

If installation is hanging up, there could be something wrong with your installation media. But if you're trying to reinstall onto the same drive you think has failed, then check it for damaged sectors. You can run the manufacturer's utility if applicable, or you can download something like HDAT2 and run one of the more basic scans (be prepared to wait) to see if it's able to repair anything.

Grey screen = not formatting. ;) You'll have real time progress notification during Windows installation.
