I have an Asus s5np (hold the snickering, please) that I've been using for about 2 years now. I had always been using the extended 9 Cell battery, and now it's at the end of it's life (lasts about 30 minutes on a full charge). So I bought a new battery, but have encountered a problem:

My laptop no longer works unless it is on AC power - It will not boot unless no battery is connected (EXCEPT with the 9cell. With the 3 and 6cell batteries [NEW], this problem arises) and will not charge the batteries. There is no sign that the computer even detects the battery, except that it refuses to boot (gets stuck in a boot cycle - never gets to Windows loading screen).

If I turn the computer on with just AC Power, then try to hot swap the battery in.. it detects the battery just fine - system shuts off as soon as AC power is discontinued. I would think that it's an issue with the whatever does the battery detecting/etc on the mainboard, but throws me off is that I CAN boot/hot-swap with the 9cell, though the battery life of my deteriorates 9cell makes it useless (and it also no longer seems to charge?).

I'm 99% sure that both my 3cell and 6cell work, as they were used with the laptop for about a week prior to the occurrence of this problem.

Can anyone help<?> I use my laptop everyday, and I can't shell out for a new one at the moment. I realize this may not be a fixable problem, but I'd at least like to know the root of the problem.

Have you tried updating the bios?

The fact that both batteries (from different sources) worked flawlessly prior to having this problem, and that the 9cell no longer will charge, have me convinced that the problem is not in the new batteries.

Also, I'm in a position where it would be quite difficult to return the batteries, as they were purchased while I was away somewhere/in person at the warehouse of an estore . So RMA is not an option.. Since the warranty is with the manufacturer and not the retailer, and there's no digital receipt of my purchase, (paid in cash) I'd have to go back to the warehouse in person - not an option at the moment. And I don't think I can honestly say that the battery is defective.

I'm going to try flashing the bios, but the only difference in the newer version (I'm running 0213, latest is 0213A) seems to be a fix for USB booting problems.

If you have POST (no beeps) than try to run SAVE mode and check what is bad in device manager.
The possibility is your NB has a problem in the very top of the device manager tree

POST does seem successful - either that, or it doesnt even get to that point before it reboots. In any case.. everyone works fine on AC power, so I dont think the problem lies with anything that is checked in POST. I think the battery interface doodad is outside of the essentials.

Do you mean safe mode? If you do, Im unable to even get to the boot selection menu to get into safe mode. System doesn't even start loading windows before it reboots. I'm running (have been - this is my sole computer ATM) on AC power, and device manager reports no problems.

Do you have the part numbers for these batteries?

We should start by verifying that the units are indeed the right ones and are compatible. It might be also helpful to know if they are genuine or aftermarket-market clones.

Don't have the part numbers on me at the moment. But I can say with certainty that the 9 and 3 cell batteries are correct and genuine. The 6 cell is an aftermarket battery, as seen here.
